Women’s tennis squares off with in-state foe in nationally-televised matchup Sunday.
LAKE NONA, Fla. – Off the heels of a 4-2 win over No. 28 Oklahoma on Friday, the No. 48 University of Florida women's tennis team returns to action Sunday, Feb. 24 when it travels to Lake Nona to take on the No. 30 UCF Knights at the USTA National Campus as part of the part of the College MatchDay Series. Match time is set for 5:30 p.m. ET as the Gators and Knights meet for the 13th time.
The contest will air live on the Tennis Channel with Leif Shiras and Tracy Austin on the call while Hana Ostapchuk will handle the sideline reporting duties.
College MatchDay is a series of marquee neutral-site college tennis matches designed to showcase some of the nation's top collegiate tennis programs. The event is free and will feature a Net Generation kids' clinic, as well as additional kids activities, live music, specialty food and drinks, games and giveaways at the USTA National Campus.
Three College MatchDay events so far this season have averaged more than 1,000 fans.
The Gators overcame the loss of the doubles point and turned in a strong effort in singles play to dispatch the visiting Oklahoma Sooners Friday evening in Gainesville. No. 12 Ida Jarlksog clinched the match victory with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win on court one. No. 33 McCartney Kessler, Tsveta Dimitrova and Anastasia Kharitonova also picked up wins in singles competition as UF improved to 3-2 when conceding the doubles point.
The Knights have opened the season with a 7-2 record which includes a 4-0 mark in matches played at home. UCF features two ranked players as redshirt-sophomore Valeryia Zeleva comes in at No. 29 and freshman Marie Mattel holds a No. 119 ranking. Zeleva and teammate Ksenia Kuznetsova are the lone ranked doubles pairing in the matchup as they tout a No. 22 ranking. UCF notched a pair of victories over SEC squads last weekend as it won 6-1 at Alabama and 6-1 at Ole Miss.
UCF and Florida share one common opponent as both teams were upended by Florida State. Florida fell to the Seminoles at home this past Tuesday 4-1 while UCF dropped a 5-2 decision in Tallahassee on Jan. 20.
Florida holds a 12-0 mark in the all-time series which dates back to 2002. Sunday marks the first matchup between the programs played away from Gainesville.
The matchup features a total of five singles players ranked by the ITA.
Last season playing in the College MatchDay event, Florida dropped a 4-1 decision to in-state foe Florida State. Emma, Kessler and Katie Kubicz all competed in the event in 2018.
Sunday marks the Gators' final non-conference clash as they kickoff SEC play Friday, March 1 with a matchup vs. Ole Miss.
