Gators Return to Action at LSU Alumni Gold
Friday, April 19, 2019 | Track and Field
BATON ROUGE, La. – Following a two-plus-week hiatus from competition, Florida's top-10 track and field teams return to action Saturday at the LSU Alumni Gold. The Gators last lined up against other schools at the end of March, when they hosted Pepsi Florida Relays.
Florida's men, ranked third in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's ratings index, are looking to add more NCAA East Preliminary qualifiers in the sprints and mid-distance. Those chasing qualifying times without a berth already likely in hand are seniors Sam Ahrenholz (1,500 meters) and Kyren Hollis (800 meters), as well as sophomores Benjamin Lobo Vedel (400 meters) and Cory Poole (400-meter hurdles).
The marquee event of the day for the men will be the 4x100 relay, which will pit the third-ranked Gators against nation-leading LSU. Florida's squad of junior Raymond Ekevwo, sophomore Hakim Sani Brown, junior Grant Holloway, and senior Ryan Clark clocked a 38.69-second time three weeks ago. That same weekend, LSU posted a time of 38.41 seconds at the Texas Relays.
For the Gators' women, currently ranked No. 7 nationally, do not have as many NCAA East Preliminary qualifiers to chase, but several will be looking to improve upon their season openers. That group is made up of senior Yanis David (long jump), sophomore Abbie Harrelson (800 meters), junior Brandee' Johnson (100-meter hurdles), sophomore Taylor Manson (400 meters), junior Kala Penn (long jump), redshirt senior Megan Reed (javelin throw), sophomore Nikki Stephens (400-meter hurdles), and freshman Gabrielle Wilkinson (800 meters).
The most notable openers for Florida's women will come from freshman Doneisha Anderson (400 meters) and Elisabeth Bergh (1,500 meters).
