Former Gator Erika Lang-Montgomery joins staff as assistant coach.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. –– Former Florida women's basketball player Erika Lang-Montgomery is returning to the program as an assistant, Gators head coach Cameron Newbauer announced Monday.
Lang-Montgomery, who was a four-year letter winner at UF from 1988-1992, brings with her over 20 years of coaching experience and spent the last 10 seasons as the head coach at Flagler College in St. Augustine. The Jacksonville native compiled a 39-17 record over her final two campaigns with the Saints and was tabbed 2019 Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year.
"We are thrilled to welcome one of Florida's own back to the Swamp. Erika is a Gator through and through and brings a wealth of coaching experience to our staff," Newbauer said. "She has spent the past 24 years coaching and developing young ladies as a head and assistant coach. Most recently, she led Flagler to its best season in over 40 years and is fresh off being named the league's coach of the year."
Departing Flagler as the longest-tenured coach in program history, Lang-Montgomery amassed 111 career wins and helped lead the transition of the program from NAIA to Division II. This past season, she guided the Saints to a 21-8 record, the program's best finish since 1977.
"There's no place like home. It is an honor and a blessing to have the opportunity to return to UF, a place that I have worn close to my heart every day for many years. I have truly loved being a member of the Gator Nation. I have so many wonderful memories of my time at Florida. I made life-long friendships and I met my husband in the O'Connell Center," said Lang-Montgomery. "I'm excited to be a part of Cam's staff and to be a part of what he's building here. I look forward to getting to work, meeting our team and getting to know each of them individually. Go Gators!"
Before making the move to northeastern Florida, Lang-Montgomery built an expansive resume as a Division I assistant, holding positions at Purdue (1995-96), Florida State (1996-97), USC (1997-2000), Wisconsin (2000-2003), Wichita State (2003-08) and North Texas (2008-09) across 14 seasons.
During her playing days in Gainesville, Lang-Montgomery was an efficient scorer and dependable low-post presence for the Gators. The 1989 SEC All-Freshman team selection appeared in exactly 100 games, including 63 starts, and finished with 962 points and 647 rebounds. She led Florida with a .514 shooting percentage in 1990 and paced the team in blocks in 1989.
Lang-Montgomery played her final two seasons under the program's all-time winningest coach, Carol Ross. She then spent the 1992-93 campaign as a student assistant coach under Ross.
Striving to develop her players on and off the court, Lang-Montgomery coached nine players to all-conference honors at Flagler, guided 16 players to academic all-conference accolades and garnered seven Peach Belt Conference Team Sportsmanship awards.
"Erika's work ethic, knowledge of the game and passion for the University of Florida will impact our program immediately. Erika has been an ambassador for Gator Nation since she first stepped foot on campus as a student athlete and now we are excited for her to help recruit, develop and mentor the next generation of Florida Gators," added Newbauer.
Lang-Montgomery earned her bachelor's degree in exercise and sports sciences with a specialization in sport management and her and her husband Larry have two sons, Jaden and Justin.
