Eleven Gators Qualify for Last SEC Finals Session

Florida will head into the last session in first-place with 887.5 points.
Auburn, Ala. – A total of 11 Florida swimmers will hit the pool in the last finals session of the 2020 Southeastern Conference Championships at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center on the campus of Auburn.

Florida, currently holding a 160.5 lead, will head into the fifth and finals session with five A-Finalists, two B-finalists and four C-final representatives as they look to secure their eighth-straight and 41st overall conference crown. 

Clark Beach will head into tonight's 200 back A-final as the top seed as he touched in the fifth-fastest time this year with an effort of 1:40.12.

Kieran Smith and Khader Baqlah continued their fast swimming at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center, both advancing to the 100 free A-final.

Smith posted a new personal-best time of 42.52 to hold the fourth-fastest prelim time. The effort stands as the seventh-fastest swim in program history.

Baqlah finished two spots behind him in sixth with his time of 42.74.

Florida's second event with a pair of A-finalists is the 200 breast, with Grant Sanders and Marco Guarente posting top-eight swims in the morning.

Marco Guarente posted a new personal-best swim of 1:54.05 to finish sixth overall, while Sanders finished right behind him in seventh with a time of 1:54.63.

Ethan Beach will be Florida's lone competitor in 200 back B-final after registering a 15th-place nod with an effort of 1:43.19.

A pair of Gators would qualify for the 200 back C-final, led by Miguel Cancel with a swim of 1:43.83, good for 17th.  Tyler Silver will join him, as the senior posted the 23rd-fastest time of 1:44.97.

Dakota Mahaffey was Florida's fifth and final swimmer in the event, finishing in 27th with a swim of 1:45.77.

After tying for the 16th-best time, Eric Friese will swim in the 100 free C-final after losing by a touch in a swim-off for the final spot in the B-final. His time in the prelim stands as a new personal-best for the freshman.

Gerry Quinn also set a new personal-best in the event prelims, touching in 43.63. The mark is .22 seconds quicker than his previous-best set in 2018.

A final trio of Will Davis, Isaac Davis and Jack Szaranek took to the pool in the 100 free. Will Davis finished in 38th with a time
of 43.99, with Isaac Davis finishing in 42nd-overall with a new personal-best tally of 44.13.

Jack Szaranek would earn a 48th-place nod with his time of 44.53.

Chandler Bray and Kevin Vargas both qualified for a Saturday night final with their 200 breast swims.

Bray will swim in the B-final after touching in a season-best swim of 1:56.33.

Vargas hit a new personal-best swim with his time of 1:57.1 to finish in 18th.

What's Next
Florida will look to claim this year's conference title on Saturday night.

The 1,650 free finals will begin with some heats taking place during the afternoon, with the remainder being swam as the opening event of the finals.

The remainder of the slate includes the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, women's platform and 400 free relay.
