Gators Set to Host First SEC Weekend

Women’s tennis welcomes nationally-ranked LSU and Texas A&M.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Winners of four-straight matches, the No. 38 University of Florida women's tennis team will host its first two SEC home contests of the season when it welcomes No. 25 LSU Friday and No. 36 Texas A&M Sunday at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
Florida opened its SEC docket last weekend with a pair of top 50 road victories. Florida earned a 4-2 win at No. 47 Alabama and followed that up with a momentous 4-3 victory at No. 48 Auburn. Marlee Zein, 5-0 on the season, posted the match-clinching win against the Tigers as she battled back to record a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory.
Zein and Jarlskog lead the Gators with five dual match victories. Jarlskog, the 2019 ITA All-American, has won her last four contests.
In the most recent issue of the ITA rankings, the Gators featured three with No. 54 McCartney Kessler, No. 67 Layne Sleeth and No. 11 Victoria Emma. Kessler, UF's No. 1, has 20 overall wins and has won her last three dual tilts.
On the doubles side, Florida has two ranked sides including its No. 1 pairing of Kessler and Zein who are slated at No. 58 in the nation. The Gators' doubles play has improved significantly with the advent of its new pairings; Zein and Kessler have won three straight together.
The Tigers (9-2, 2-0 SEC) have compiled six-straight wins including victories at No. 20 Vanderbilt and at home vs. Missouri. No. 36 Taylor Bridges and No. 71 Safiya Carrington both appear in the ITA rankings and have both racked up six wins. Eden Richardson has a team-best nine dual match victories. Richardson and Nina Geissler are the No. 26-ranked doubles tandem. The Tigers are under the direction of co-head coaches Julie and Michael Sell. The former Julie Scaringe enjoyed a decorated career as a Florida Gator, playing under Coach Thornqvist and competing for Florida at the No. 1 position during their 2003 NCAA National Championship season.
Texas A&M (12-2, 1-1) split its opening SEC weekend with a win vs. Arkansas and a loss at Kentucky. No. 99 Tatiana Makarova and No. 107 Dorthea Faa-Hviding represent the Aggies in the ITA rankings while Jayci Goldsmith and Makarova combine to form the nation's No. 37 combo. The junior Makarova is off to an 11-0 start in dual match play and has won her last 16 matches overall. The Aggies were selected to finish fifth in the SEC Preseason Poll.
In a series that dates back to 1975, Florida holds a 47-1 edge over the Tigers with its lone loss coming in Baton Rouge during the 2009 season.
In terms of Texas A&M, Florida holds an 8-2 mark in the series which began in 2013, the same season the Aggies joined the SEC. Florida has won the last seven meetings after falling to the Aggies in the 2014 SEC Tournament.
UF recorded wins at LSU and Texas A&M in the same weekend a season ago.
Following the action in Gainesville, the Gators hit the road for matchups at Georgia and Tennessee next weekend.
