No. 21 Gators vs. No. 22 Knights Set for Friday in Lake Nona

Women's tennis hits the road for first challenge away from home against UCF at the USTA National Campus.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Fresh off its 7-0 win over Georgia State in its season opener, the No. 21 University of Florida women's tennis team takes on its first road test Friday, Jan. 29 when it travels to Lake Nona for a matchup with No. 22 UCF. First serve is slated for 3 p.m. ET from the USTA National Campus.
Improving to 42-2 all time in home openers, Florida battled successfully for the doubles point and never looked back. In singles the Gators were dominant, winning all six courts in straight sets. No. 32 McCartney Kessler, senior Ida Jarlskog, junior Marlee Zein and junior Sydney Berlin all collected victories along with rookies Sara Dahlstrom and Amber McGinnis who notched their first career dual match wins. Dahlstrom and Jarlskog paired up for an impressive 6-1 win and Berlin and McGinnis stormed back from an early deficit to notch a 6-3 victory.
Florida opened the season with a No. 21 ranking and held firm in that position in the most recent issue which was released this past Wednesday.
No. 18 UCF enters the matchup in search of its first win after dropping a pair of tilts at the ITA Kickoff at NC State. The Knights dropped a close one to No. 16 Wake Forest, 4-3, and fell 4-0 to the host Wolfpack. UCF, which finished the shortened season of 2020 with a 10-3 record, has a quartet of ranked singles players.
Friday's matchup features five ranked singles players with Kessler boasting the highest ranking at No. 32 and two ranked doubles pairings. The Gators' No. 1 doubles duo Kessler and Zein is ranked No. 26 while UCF's Rebeka Stolmar and Marrie Mattel combine to form the nation's No. 6 unit.
Florida has claimed 12 of the 13 all-time meetings between the Gators and Knights with its lone loss coming in Lake Nona in 2019 at College Match Day.
In the 2019 rendition of the series, Florida came out strong and secured the doubles point but ultimately dropped the match, 4-3. In front of 2,000 fans, UCF's Nandini Sharma clinched the match on court six. Jarlskog added a three-set win in the matchup while also posting a doubles victory.
Following Florida's matchup at UCF, it will next compete Thursday, Feb. 4 at No. 9 Florida State.
