TALLAHASEE, Fla. – The Gators opened their outdoor season strong Thursday in Tallahassee as newcomer Claire Bryant, redshirt Thea Jensen, redshirt junior Dedrick Vanover and redshirt senior Connor Bandel posted performances that rank among the top 10 in the nation.
Bryant, who finished second in the nation indoors after breaking the school record in the long jump, set the tone during her first collegiate outdoor meet with the third-best mark on this year's NCAA Division I Outdoor Qualifying list. The freshman logged a leap of 6.44 meters (21 feet, 1.50 inches), earning a spot on UF's Outdoor All-Time Top 10 list where she ranks tied for ninth.
On the men's side, Vanover logged a time of 20.87 seconds in the 200 meters. A new outdoor personal best for Vanover, his time ranks fifth in the nation. Meanwhile, Bandel opened his outdoor campaign with an improved personal-best mark of 19.50 meters (63 feet, 11.75 inches) in the shot put to rank sixth in the NCAA and fourth in school history.
Jensen, who earned bronze at SEC Indoors earlier this year, closed the evening for the Gators in the shot put with a mark of 16.36 meters (53 feet, 8.25 inches) that ranks seventh in the NCAA and ninth in school history.
The Gators will return to action Friday with freshman Joey Stravato and redshirt senior Brandee' Johnson opening up in the 110-meter hurdles.
