Pepsi Florida Relays: Day 1 Highlighted by Mardal’s New School Record, NCAA Lead

Fahnbulleh, Barrett, Brown among many Gators who posted impressive performances

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Gators opened Florida Relays weekend in Gainesville with several times and marks that rank among the best 10 nationally, including an NCAA-leading performance by senior Thomas Mardal Friday at Percy Beard Track inside James G. Pressly Stadium.

Mardal, who closed his indoor collegiate career with a school record, an SEC title and an NCAA championship in the weight throw a few weeks ago, began his final outdoor season at Florida with that same momentum.

The Gloppen, Norway native got things going for the Gators with a hammer throw mark of 75.77 meters (248 feet, 7.25) to break his own school record and take the lead on this year's NCAA Division I Outdoor Qualifying list.

Meanwhile on the opposite side of the track, senior Clayton Brown was picking up momentum of his own. The jumper, who entered the weekend as the No. 3-ranked triple jumper in the Division I, made his way into the top 5 in the high jump with a mark of 2.23 meters (7 feet, 3.75 inches).

On the track, NCAA 100-meters leader Joseph Fahnbulleh secured the No. 2 spot on this year's NCAA Division I Outdoor Qualifying list and in the world in the 200 meters. The redshirt freshman, who was named SEC Newcomer of the Week after his performance at last week's FSU Relays, clocked a time of 20.10 [+1.0] seconds that ranks sixth in school history.

Redshirt seniors Connor Bandel and Denzel Villaman also contributed to Florida's top-10 performances.

Bandel, who competed in the shot put, logged an outdoor personal-best mark of 19.54 meters (64 feet, 1.25 inches) that ranks seventh in the NCAA and fourth in school history. Meanwhile, Villaman crossed in 50.21 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles, landing on the No. 7 spot of this year's NCAA Division I Outdoor Qualifying list.

Florida's distance corps also had an impressive afternoon.

Redshirt sophomores Imogen Barrett and Gabrielle Wilkinson entered UF's Outdoor All-Time Top 10 list after posting a pair of new personal-best times in the 1,500 meters.

Barrett logged at time of 4:15.67 that ranks second in the NCAA and sixth in school history. Meanwhile, Wilkinson finished in 4:16.85, which is the sixth-fastest time in the nation this year and the ninth-fastest time in program history.

In the 5,000 meters, freshman Stephy Ormsby logged a new personal-best time of 15:54.73. Her time ranks third on UF's All-Time Top 10 list and 10th in the NCAA.

On the men's side, redshirt sophomore Trevor Foley finished won the Steeplechase with a personal-best time of 8:53.27, securing the No. 10 spot on UF's All-Time Top 10 list and the second-fastest time in the nation.

Other notable performances included new personal records by Cameron Mahorn in the 200 meters (21.59), and Vasileia Spyrou (4:20.24) and Marshall Dillon (3:48.33) in the 1,500 meters.
