Eight Gators Hit Olympic Qualifying Times

Between the BSS TYR meet and the UANA Tokyo Qualifier, eight Gators recorded a total of nine US qualifying times
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Eight Gators registered a total of nine US Olympic qualifying times on Saturday afternoon at both the BSS TYR meet and the UANA Tokyo Qualifier.
The women's team kicked off the day at the 2021 BSS TYR May Meet in Jacksonville, Fla., where Talia Bates registered US Olympic qualifying times in two events.
The sophomore paced the squad with a 2:01.15 swim in the 200 free – a 2.05 second drop from her seed time – and followed that performance with a swim of 25.86 in the 50 free. Bates finished first in both events on the day.
The men continued to produce on day 3 of the UANA Qualifier in Clearwater, Fla., recording seven US Olympic qualifying times.
Kieran Smith registered a qualifying swim of 23.14 in the 50 free– a 0.23 second drop from the prelims. Adam Chaney and Will Davis also each hit the notched a qualifying time in the event. Chaney swam a time of 22.65 – a 0.90 drop from prelims – while Davis recorded a time of 22.91, 0.56 seconds better than his prelim time.
Amro Al-Wir shaved a stellar 7.78 off his prelim time in the 200 breast with a swim of 2:17.39 to finish 11th in the event.
Alfonso Mestre topped the 400 free finals, posting a qualifying time of 3:51.65 – an 8.74 drop from his prelim time. Trey Freeman, Mitch D'Arrigo and Bobby Finke went 4-5-6 in the event, with all three hitting US qualifying times of 3:53.06, 3:54.42 and 3:54.72, respectively.
Both the men and women close out their respective meets on Sunday.
