
No. 57 Siimar, Shelbayh Defeat No. 3 Doubles Pairing on Day One of Gator Fall Invite

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida's fall season commenced as the reigning national champions welcomed UCF, South Carolina and NC State to town for the first day of the Gator Fall Invite on Friday, Sept. 10 at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex. The Gators went an impressive 10-2 on the day, including a doubles victory for No. 57 doubles pairing Mattias Siimar and freshman Abedallah Shelbayh over a top-five duo from UCF.
Teams started the tournament with doubles play. At court one, the No. 57-ranked duo of Florida newcomers, Shelbayh and Siimar, defeated UCF's No. 3 pairing of Bogdan Pavel and Trey Hilderbrand in a thrilling match, 8-4.
Andy Andrade and Will Grant took care of business on court two after defeating JC Roddick and Kento Yamada, 8-1, in a quick match. On court three, Nate Bonetto and Ben Shelton collected Florida's third doubles victory after defeating Bryan Triana and Cooper White, 8-3. Blaise Bicknell and Josh Goodger put up a fight against Fons Van Sambeek and Martins Rocens of NC State, but fell 8-6 in the match.
Goodger and Bicknell continued their undefeated efforts into the new season after winning both their singles matches. No. 59 Goodger's match was the first completed on the day after winning against White, 6-1, 6-2, on court six. Andrade, the No. 14-ranked singles player, took on Triana at court four and took the match in two sets by 6-3 scores.
No. 103 Siimar defeated Roddick on court three for his second win of the day, 6-3, 6-4. His doubles partner, Shelbayh, also won his second match after beating Pavel, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, on court five. Grant took on Quinn Snyder later in the day and made quick work with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Freshman Bonetto also picked up two wins today in his Gators debut after defeating Collin Shick of NC State, 6-4, 6-4.
After Goodger won the first singles match on the day to keep his undefeated streak intact, No. 33 Bicknell also continued his undefeated heroics after winning his singles match in a battle against No. 88 Yamada, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4, in the second to last match of the day. No. 86 Shelton rounded out the Gators play after dropping a tough match in three sets to Hilderbrand, 7-5, 4-6, 4-6.
