GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A week after Florida's men's tennis players Sam Riffice and Ben Shelton competed at the US Open Men's Tennis Championships, the university will have another Gator competing at a high-level tournament, this time with freshman Abedallah Shelbayh making an appearance in singles and doubles competition at the US Open Junior Championships starting on September 6.
Shelbayh had an outstanding summer of competition this year after getting to the doubles finals at Junior Wimbledon, winning the doubles title at the J1 Roehampton tournament and appearing in the doubles finals at the M15 Monastir tournament.
Not only did he do well in doubles play, but the Gator also got to the second round of singles competition at Junior Wimbledon after beating Mans Dahlberg, 6-4, 6-3, in the first round.
He will be playing with doubles partner, Daniel Rincon, who is the No. 5-ranked junior player in the world. Shelbayh comes in at No. 30 in junior rankings and will appear in the singles and doubles main draw.
The US Open Junior Championships is set to begin September 6 and run through September 11 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Shelbayh will face No. 22-ranked Ozan Colak in the first round of singles on Monday, Sept. 6. Doubles competition starts on Tuesday, Sept. 7.
