Malcolm Clemons Wins Long Jump, Men's Sprinters Shine on Opening Day of Tyson Invitational
Friday, February 11, 2022 | Track and Field
Fayetteville, Ark. – With talented athletes in every event at the Tyson Invitational, the Florida Track and Field team received strong performances in a number of key areas to open the weekend's action.
Long Jumper Malcolm Clemons made his return to action for the first time in over a month by jumping a season best of 7.80m/25-7.25 and winning the Long Jump event on Friday afternoon. His mark also puts him at 12th in the NCAA on the descending order list.
PJ Austin (7.65m/25-1.25) and Jalen Chance (7.60m/24-11.25) finished 4th and 6th respectively to begin a successful day for Florida jumpers.
Austin followed up his long jump performance by placing 4th in the finals of the 60 meters. Fellow Gator Dedrick Vanover ran a 6.69 in the finals to take third place.
The Gators made a lot of noise on the men's side of the 400 meters. Ryan Willie (45.83) and Champion Allison (45.92) finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Allison's race was his first 400-meter race of his Florida career.
Both of those marks are in the top-5 in the NCAA this season alongside teammate Jacory Patterson (45.98). The Gators have the top three 400 meters in the SEC this season as well.
Grace Stark tied a personal best of 7.86 in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles before running a 8.00 in the finals and finishing in second place. On the men's side, Kurt Powdar finished 6th with a personal best of 7.80 in the finals.
Jasmine Moore closed out the day by jumping a 6.53m/21-5.25 to finish second behind former NCAA Champion Tara Davis in the Long Jump Invitational.
Quotable: Head Coach Mike Holloway:
On today's performance:
"I thought we had a good day. I felt in some circumstances we weren't very focused today. We had some mental lapses. It happens. We've had two great meets and it's not very uncommon to come into this meet a little flatter and unfocused. But the great thing is, it's not championship season yet. We've got two weeks to get that going. I'm excited about some things we did. We had some great quarter miles by Ryan Willie and Champion Allison. I thought they did a great job. Jasmine [Moore] did a great job. Grace Stark did a good job in the semifinals. In the final, it just wasn't her day. In the overall results, we got better in a lot of areas. But there's still work to do."
