Saturday, February 26, 2022 | Track and Field
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Florida Women's Track and Field got off to a hot start at the 2022 SEC Indoor Championships, scoring 39 points through five events including a pair of gold medals and school records from Anna Hall (Pentathlon) and Jasmine Moore (Long Jump).
The Florida Men's Track and Field scored seven points in the Long Jump from Caleb Foster and Malcolm Clemons before a fifth-place effort from the DMR team pushed the Florida team total to 11 heading into the final day.
Florida got the day started with impressive efforts in the Pentathlon. Hall closed the event in the 800 meters with a time of 2:05.33, the seventh-fastest mark in Florida history. Her 4618 points in the event makes her the new NCAA and World Leader this season.
Sterling Lester (4143) and Asia Smith (4038) tallied season highs and added eight points to the team total in the process. Lester also put herself into the top-16 on the NCAA descending order list after an impressive 800 meters to close down the event.
Grace Stark picked up right where she left off this season, qualifying for tomorrow's final in the 60 meters and the 60-meter hurdles. Stark will attempt to become the first Gator to win either of those events on the women's side in school history. Her time of 7.95 was the top qualifying mark in the hurdles.
Talitha Diggs ran both the 200 and 400 meters, qualifying in both events and assuring the Gators more team points tomorrow evening.
On the men's side, Florida sent three into tomorrow's 400-meter final. Champion Allison ran the top-qualifying mark of the evening (45.57) while Ryan Willie and Jacory Patterson join him in the final.
Cameron Miller ran a blazing 20.59 in the prelims of the 200m, the top-qualifying mark and the fifth-best time in the NCAA this season. He is joined by Joseph Fahnbulleh in the finals.
Claire Bryant used an amazing final jump (6.42m) to regain third place in the Long Jump and join Moore in giving the Gators 16 team points. The Florida women's DMR team took fourth place and scored five points after outstanding performances across all four legs.
Florida will have athletes in 10 of the 12 final events on the women's side tomorrow and 8 of the 12 on the men's side as well.
Semira Killebrew, Dedrick Vanover, Kurt Powdar, Gabrielle Wilkinson, Sam Austin and Imogen Barrett also qualified into their respective finals tomorrow night.
The Florida Women will have an ultra-competitive team race on their hands tomorrow afternoon with Arkansas, LSU and Kentucky likely in the mix.
Competition will get started with Hall and Bryant in tomorrow's High Jump and end with the fan-favorite 4x400 relay.

On today's performance:
"I thought we did a great job today. We were a little flat in some areas particularly in the men's 60 meters. But hey, I'm the sprints coach that's on me. I thought the ladies were great. Started with the Pentathlon with Anna [Hall] setting a new school record and personal best. Sterling [Lester] with a new season best and Asia [Smith] as well. Jasmine [Moore] won the Long Jump and Claire [Bryant] coming through on her last jump. I thought we qualified well across the board. Grace Stark was big. Talitha Diggs was big. I liked the way the DMR's competed at the end of the day as well.
On Cam Miller's performance:
"Super happy for Cam Miller. This is his first SEC Indoor Championships as a Gator. He's had some injuries and to come in here tonight and run 20.59 in the 200 meters, one of the best performances in school history and a big personal best, I was super excited for him."
