Florida Men and Women Take 2nd Place at SEC Indoor Championship
Saturday, February 26, 2022 | Track and Field
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – After battling eventual champion Arkansas all weekend long, the Florida Men's and Women's Track and Field teams both earned a 2nd-place finish at the 2022 SEC Indoor Championships.
The Florida women tallied 97 points with just 18 individuals competing and no 4x400 relay score. The Gators held the team lead after 14 events before eventually losing the lead to Arkansas after the Razorbacks scored big points in the 3000 meters and Pole Vault.
On the weekend, the Florida women had four individual champions including a clean sweep of the Long Jump and Triple Jump from Jasmine Moore. Moore became the first SEC Athlete to accomplish that feat since Florida's Yanis David did the same in 2019.
After scoring 20 individual points, Moore was also the joint winner with Arkansas' Lauren Gregory of the Commissioner's Trophy for the most individual points by an athlete at the SEC Championships.
Moore now has four individual SEC Indoor Championships in her collegiate career, including three straight in the Triple Jump.
Grace Stark was the fourth individual champion of the weekend for the women after clocking a 7.91 in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles. She got off to a fast start and was able to hold off Tennessee's Charisma Taylor for all ten points.
Joining those two on the podium on Saturday night included Talitha Diggs (3rd in 400m, 4th in 200m), Imogen Barrett (3rd in 800m) and Natricia Hooper (2nd in Triple Jump).
Both Stark and Semira Killebrew scored points in the 60 meters while Gabrielle Wilkinson also tallied a point in the finals of the 800 meters.
Claire Bryant followed up her bronze medal in the Long Jump by jumping a personal best of 1.82m in the High Jump to claim four points for the Gators.
The Florida men used a late surge in the sprint events to climb all the way into 2nd place. The Gators used a hefty effort in the 400 meters behind a personal best from Champion Allison (1sr, 45.04) and 2nd and 4th place finishes from Ryan Willie and Jacory Patterson respectively.
Allison's mark is 3rd in Florida history and 2nd in the NCAA this season. The trio continues to shine in the event, all holding top-9 marks in the NCAA heading into the National Indoor Championships in two weeks.
Cameron Miller continued his late-season surge by clocking a 20.60 in the finals of the 200 meters. Joseph Fahnbulleh added to the team total with a pair of points and a 7th-place finish.
On the straightaway, Kurt Powdar and Dedrick Vanover combined for 17 points from the 60-meter hurdles and 60 meters respectively.
Powdar ran a personal best 7.73 and surged into 2nd right at the end of the race in his first appearance at the SEC Indoor Championships. Vanover ran perhaps the tightest race of the entire event, finishing in a tie for first (6.633) with Georgia's Matthew Boling.
The pair were each awarded nine team points after the joint victory.
Sam Austin became the lone true freshman to medal for the Gators this year (3rd in 800m).
The 2nd Place finish for the women is a repeat after also finishing runner-up at last year's SEC Indoor Championships. The men recorded their highest place since winning the event in 2019.
All attention now turns to Birmingham for the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships on March 11th and 12th. Both the men and women will take a number of individuals along with both 4x400 relay teams in search of a National Championship.

On the performance from the women's team
"We had a great weekend. Today was a rollover from yesterday. Grace Stark winning the hurdles and bring 4th in the 60 meters. Talitha [Diggs] doubled and was 3rd and 4th. Imogen Barrett with a big personal best in the 800 meters. We just fought all day long. Jasmine Moore, wow, winning the commissioner's trophy and the long jump and triple jump. I think what you saw out of the women is what you're going to see out of them from this day forward. That's who we are, we're going to fight."
On the men's performance:
"We've seen signs in practice of what you saw there. Honestly, I think there's more there. I think at the end of the day, I wasn't surprised we did that, they weren't surprised we did that. We honestly thought we could score more points."
