Florida Heads to NCAA Indoor Championships with Team-Title Aspirations
Tuesday, March 8, 2022 | Track and Field
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - After three months of competition, the 2022 Indoor Track and Field season culminates this weekend in Birmingham, Ala. with the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Florida heads to Birmingham this weekend with lofty expectations after taking second place on both the men's and women's side at the SEC Indoor Championships at the end of February.
The Gators will bring 18 total entries, including both 4x400 relay teams, in hopes of individual and team championships.
Women:
Florida's women's team will enter the championships among the favorites to contend for the team title. The Gators boast 12 entries on the women's side with 10 of those projected to score based on the national descending order list.
Jasmine Moore and Anna Hall enter the weekend fresh off spectacular performances at the SEC Indoor Championships. Moore swept the Long Jump and Triple Jump competitions, the third Gator to accomplish that feat.
Her marks in both events lead the nation and are new school records. Anna Hall's 4618 points in the Pentathlon broke her own school record and registered her as the new-NCAA leader heading into the weekend.
Between the Long Jump, Triple Jump and Pentathlon, the Gators bring six entries, all of them inside the top-9 in the NCAA.
"Getting to compete at nationals is the highest achievement in collegiate athletics," long jumper Claire Bryant said. "I can't wait to showcase my god-given abilities alongside my talented teammates."
Florida will also bring heavy talent in the sprint events with entries in the 60 meters, 60-meter hurdles, 400 meters and the 4x400 relay. The Gators will also enter Imogen Barrett among the mid-distance events in the 800 meters.
Grace Stark was one of Florida's four individual SEC Champions when she ran 7.91 in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles to claim the first title in that event in program history.
She heads into this weekend's competition with big point-scoring opportunities. In talented fields in both the 60 meters and 60-meter hurdles, Stark is seeded 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Florida has never won an NCAA Indoor Title in either event, giving Stark the ability to make even more history this weekend.
"I'm very excited to go to Birmingham this week and be able to compete for a national title, not only individually but as a team as well," Stark said.
Talitha Diggs (400m), Semira Killebrew (60m), Barrett (800m), Sterling Lester (Pentathlon) and Natricia Hooper (Triple Jump) all have big point-scoring ability in their respective events.
The five of them combined for 39.5 points at the SEC Championships and all return to the biggest stage with past NCAA Championship experience.
"I'm excited to continue the momentum and great efforts that I have had up to nationals," Diggs said. "I'm looking forward to being with the team and setting the tone of the meet each day."
The Gators have entries in eight different events. Competition will start with the Pentathlon and end with the ultra-competitive 4x400 relay on Saturday evening.
Men:
Florida's men's team will bring six entries, including a number of heavy hitters, in search of a sixth NCAA Indoor National Championship.
Dedrick Vanover (60m) and Champion Allison (400m) turned in impressive efforts at the SEC Indoor Championships, bringing home gold medals in their respective events.
Jacory Patterson and Ryan Willie join Allison in the 400 meters where the Gators hope to score big points in the team race. The trio all have marks ranked in the top-9 in the NCAA this season and the top-15 in the world.
Sam Austin makes his debut at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 800 meters. After taking third at the SEC Indoor Championships, the Florida native will enter a talented event field in search of more accolades.
Florida's 4x400 relay team will enter the competition with the best mark in the NCAA and the World this season. The Gators took silver at the SEC Championships, missing out on gold by just .02 seconds.
The team of Patterson, Willie, Jacob Miley and Allison will look to win Florida's first NCAA Indoor title in the 4x400 relay since 2005.
"It means a lot to compete against some of the best athletes not only in college but around the world," Allison said.
The Gators enter the weekend ranked No. 7 in the nation in a tight field on the men's side chalk full of talented teams.
