ATHENS, Ga. – For the second time this season, the No. 4 Florida Gators defeated the No. 8 Georgia Bulldogs with a 4-0 sweep on Friday evening.
Florida (10-2, 3-0 SEC) was able to win its fifth doubles point in a row after collecting two ranked wins against Georgia (10-4, 2-1 SEC).
Gators Sam Riffice and Ben Shelton gave UF a slight advantage after defeating No. 55 Hamish Stewart and Tristan McCormick at court one by a decisive 6-2 score.
Georgia evened the doubles contest as they took the match at court three from Nate Bonetto and Duarte Vale, 6-4.
It all came down to court two where the veteran duo of Andy Andrade and Mattias Siimar were able to beat No. 27-ranked pair Trent Bryde and Philip Henning, 6-4, to clinch the doubles point and give the Gators a 1-0 lead heading into singles. The pairing moves to 11-2 overall and 8-1 in dual match play with this win.
After an hour-long rain delay and with the match moved to indoors after playing on the outdoor courts for doubles and the start of singles, Florida had to refocus and maintain their momentum as five of the six courts were up on their opponents, while another court was in a tie when the delay started.
The team's momentum never vanished, however, as the Gators picked up three ranked singles victories to seal the deal.
It started when No. 56 Riffice put together a commanding win against No. 40-ranked Henning at court two in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-1, as Florida went up 2-0.
No. 93 Andrade collected career win No. 124 as he won his rematch against No. 84 Bryde. The two faced each other back at the ITA National Indoor Championships in February, where Andrade pulled out the 6-3, 6-3 victory. The Gator once again won in two sets as he beat Bryde by scores of 6-3, 6-2, to extend Florida's lead to 3-0.
When the match was clinched, No. 109 Vale forced a third set against No. 31 McCormick at court three with a gritty 7-6 (4) second-set tiebreaker win, No. 119 Bonetto won his first set, 6-1, and was tied in the second set, 3-3, with Miguel Perez Pena at court six, and Siimar was down against Croyder, 1-3, in set two.
But, for the third time in the last five matches, it was newly-ranked ITA No. 1 Shelton who provided the clinching win for the Gators.
The Gainesville native took the first set by a score of 6-3, before dropping the next one to Stewart, 4-6. The sophomore was down early in the third set, but rallied back to win his match in three, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
En route to their sixth top-10 victory on the season, there were three Gators who remained undefeated on the day as Riffice, Andrade and Shelton all picked up victories in singles and doubles. In addition, every single Gators' victory of the match was a ranked win.
UP NEXT: The Gators take on the No. 1 team in the country as they travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to face the Tennessee Volunteers on Sunday, March 13 at 1 p.m.
