FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Bedford Cup concluded with a pair of trophies for Florida women's tennis, as
Emily De Oliveira and
Emma Shelton completed a perfect weekend of competition on Sunday afternoon.
It was an early morning for the Gators, as first serve was slated for 8 a.m. ET for both De Oliveira and Shelton. Shelton, in her semifinal match, faced-off with Emma Bardet of Florida Gulf Coast and it was a battle. In a back-and-forth first set, the athletes fought to a deciding tiebreaker at 6-6. Shelton was able to gain control for the 7-4 tiebreak and opening frame victory.
The second set was more of the same, but the senior managed to put together back-to-back wins for the 7-5 set and match clincher. Jordana Ossa awaited Shelton in the finals for the Green bracket, but the afternoon was all Shelton. The Gainesville native sprinted out to a 6-0 first set win before claiming the title behind a 6-4 effort in the second set.
In the Blue bracket, De Oliveira was slated for the early morning title match against Magdalena Hedzrak of Stetson. The sophomore put together nearly flawless consecutive sets to walk away the Blue draw singles champion, defeating her opponent: 6-1, 6-1.
The Gators will now turn their focus to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships, slated to begin on Saturday, Oct. 1 with pre-qualifying.

On Emily De Oliveira's performance…
"I was just really pleased from start to finish today, we really had a championship mindset. All four players competed really hard with great composure and determination. Obviously winning two trophies here is what we try to do at the onset. I was happy to see Emily continue her fine form and she played an almost flawless final today."
On Emma Shelton's performance….
"Emma had to really dig deep because physically it was very demanding. She had a really tough semifinal this morning and had to find a way to compete at the same level during the finals just an hour and a half later in this heat. To be honest, it was perhaps one of the finer performances that Emma has put together in that Gators uniform. I was really happy with the way she played and her decision making was great, ball striking, very few unforced errors, particularly under pressure. The most important thing with Emma was the way she competed and the way she competed in big moments. That's why she's lifting the trophy here. She worked hard and I was just really pleased for her that she was able to do it during the championship setting. It's great for the Gators."
