COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 5/6 Florida men's and women's swimming and diving teams added four more medals to their already impressive haul, as the Gators have earned 16 medals through three days of competition. For the second-straight night, Florida leads on both the men's and women's side, extending their leads headed into the final two days of competition.
Newcomers
Joshua Liendo and
Emma Weyant shined on night three, both earning golds and second-fastest swims in school history. Liendo has four medals already this week, while Weyant has three.
After securing the second-fastest prelim time in the 100 fly, Liendo, who took second in the 50 free last night to Tennessee's Jordan Crooks and was behind Crooks in the 100 fly prelim this morning, got the better of the Volunteers' star tonight, using a late push in the final 25 yards to give him his first individual gold medal this week.
"I know I wanted to have a good start and nail all the turns, which I didn't quite do," Liendo said. "I still have to work on my turns, but I knew it was going to come down to it with a race that close. It came down to the details, and coming off that last wall, I just wanted to bring it home."
With his mom in the stands and in front of a crowd of over 1,000 fans, the Canadian Olympian clocked a 44.11, his fastest time of the season and the second-fastest in school history, only behind Caeleb Dressel's NCAA record of 42.80.
"It's electric. The crowd is crazy loud in here. It's fun, it's just fun. It doesn't feel like the stakes of a normal meet, you feel the adrenaline rush from the crowd, but it's been great and I'm enjoying the team aspect of it."
Weyant snatched her second gold of the week in the women's 400 IM, touching the wall in 4:01.18, the second-fastest time in the NCAA this season and in program history. The Sarasota native shaved five seconds off her prelim time of 4:06.44.
A 2020 Olympic silver medalist in the 400-meter IM, Weyant blew away the rest of the field, finishing over three seconds ahead of the rest of the conference thanks to a 55.32 freestyle split.
The Gators secured two bronzes in the 200 free, as
Micayla Cronk's career-best swim of 1:43.77 gave her the fourth-fastest time in Florida history.
Macguire McDuff followed her up with a 1:32.34, using a late charge to propel him to his first individual medal of the Championships.
Florida returns to the pool tomorrow beginning with prelims of the 200 fly, 100 back, 100 breast, and women's platform at 9:30 a.m. (ET) on SECN+.
