GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida's Men's and Women's Cross Country teams backed an impressive season on the course with an equally impressive semester in the classroom.
Parker Valby, the NCAA Cross Country Division I National Champion, coupled her success on the course with academic prowess in the classroom as she was named the USTFCCCA Women's Cross Country National Scholar Athlete of the Year. The senior from Tampa, Florida majors in Sport Management becomes the first woman in program history to be named the Women's Scholar Athlete of the Year for the cross country season.
USTFCCCA ACADEMIC AWARDS
Both the Men's and Women's teams were named as All-Academic Teams by the USTFCCCA by earning cumulative GPAs of 3.46 and 3.43, respectively. While no individuals from the Men's team were named All-Academic Athletes,
Flomena Asekol,
Parker Valby and
Allison Wilson were named to the list for both their performance at the NCAA South Regional as well as in the classroom during the fall semester.
SEC ACADEMIC AWARDS
Men's cross country placed a league-leading 15 on the SEC Academic Honor Roll, while the women had 14 make the list. Additionally, of the four Gators across all fall sports that earned a 4.0 GPA, the Cross Country program boasts three of them:
Orlando Cicilioni,
Jonathan Pitchford and
Breanna Stuart.
To be recognized to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, each student-athlete must 1) have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship, a letter winner or have participated on a varsity team for two years if non-scholarship; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
