GATORS O'NEAL AND OVERHOLSER FALL AT REEBOK/ITA MEN'S ALL-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Thursday, October 14, 1999 | Men's Tennis
AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Florida men's tennis players Justin O'Neal and Nathan Overholser both dropped first round matches Thursday at the 1999 Reebok/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men's All-American Championships at the University of Texas' Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
O'Neal, a senior who is ranked 10th in singles in the ITA preseason rankings, lost to Stanford's 26th-ranked K.J. Hippensteel 6-3, 6-4. O'Neal will begin play in the consolation draw on Friday. Overholser, a junior who is ranked 22nd, retired from his match with TCU's 96th-ranked Trace Fielding due to a hip injury. Overholser had lost the first set 6-4 and trailed 4-3 in the second. Due to the injury Overholser and O'Neal were forced to pull out of the doubles competition. In addition, the injury will prevent Overholser from playing in the consolation draw.
This is the ninth straight year that this second leg of the ITA Grand Slam is taking place at the University of Texas - one of the nation's best settings for college tennis. Between the two qualifying tournaments and main draw, over 350 players are expected to be competing during the nine-day tournament, making it the largest NCAA Division I tennis tournament in the country.
The Reebok/ITA All-American Championships have been played annually since 1979. A number of its past participants have enjoyed successful professional tennis careers, including this year's U.S. Open finalist Todd Martin. Last year current pro James Blake of Harvard swept the singles and doubles (with
Kunj Majmudar) titles. The ITA Grand Slam also includes the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court
Championships, the Rolex National Indoor Championships and NCAA Championships. The tournament can be followed at www.tennisonline.com/ita and www.TexasSports.com.
