GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The fourth-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team (7-1, 1-0 SEC) rallied after losing the doubles point to claim its SEC opener, 5-2 over 14th-ranked Mississippi State (4-2, 0-1 SEC) Wednesday afternoon at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
The Bulldogs opened the match by claiming the doubles point with victories at number one and number three doubles after UF had gained an early advantage with a win at number two. UF's senior duo of Dylan Mann and Justin O'Neal posted an 8-2 victory at number two, but the Bulldogs evened the doubles with an 8-4 win by Jeremy Bayon and Rene-Charles Combette at number three over UF freshman Matt Behrmann and Troy Hahn. MSU's 17th-ranked team of Marco Baron and Charles Sevigny then clinched the point with an 8-5 victory at number one of UF juniors Jeff Morrison and Nathan Overholser.
The Gators grabbed the momentum in singles, though, winning the first set in all six singles matches. O'Neal, who is ranked 16th nationally, gained Florida's first win, rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Bayon, who is rated 96th. The win, combined with his doubles win earlier in the day, gives O'Neal 171 career victories at Florida, moving him into sole possession of second place on the all-time chart at UF. The win also ended a 10-match dual winning streak for Bayon. Morrison, who is ranked seventh in singles, knocked off 12th-ranked Baron, 6-3, 6-1 at number one to improve to 8-0 in dual play and halt Baron's eight-match dual winning streak. Overholser gave Florida a 3-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over David Ruiz at number three. Sophomore Olivier Levant, making his home debut, sealed a Gator win for the second straight match with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win over 76th-ranked Jerome LeBelicard at number four singles. Hahn also won in singles, outlasting Sevigny at number six singles, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-5).
Florida hits the road for a two-match road trip this Friday, March 3 when it travels to 12th-ranked Texas for a 3:00 p.m. ET match.
