FLORIDA MEN'S TENNIS RALLIES FOR 4-3 WIN OVER KENTUCKY
Sunday, March 26, 2000 | Men's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The second-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team (15-2, 6-0 SEC) used three-set victories by seniors Trey Adcock and Dylan Mann to rally for a 4-3 victory over 34th-ranked Kentucky Sunday at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex. Mann won the decisive match at number five singles, battling to a 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 win over Kentucky's Johan Grunditz after Adcock had tied the match at 3-3 with a come-from-behind victory at number six.
"We really came of age today," said Gator head coach Ian Duvenhage. "Good teams need to have people at every position who can win big matches, and we proved we have that today."
The Gators remain the only undefeated squad in the conference and have won seven consecutive matches overall. UF remains unbeaten at home this season (10-0) and has won 12 straight at Ring Tennis Complex dating back to last season.
For the seventh consecutive match the Gators took the doubles point. Juniors Jeff Morrison and Nathan Overholser upset Kentucky's 20th-ranked team of Johan Hesoun and Gustav Pousette, 8-4 at number one for their seventh straight win. Sophomore Olivier Levant and senior Justin O'Neal clinched the point with a 9-8 (7-5) victory at number two doubles to improve to 6-0 as a duo. Junior Marcos Asse and Mann closed out the sweep with an 8-6 victory at number three.
O'Neal, who is ranked 12th in the nation, continued his outstanding play in singles with his 11th consecutive victory, a 6-0, 6-0 win over Edo Bawono at number two in a match that lasted just 40 minutes. O'Neal has yet to lose a set during the streak and improved to 6-0 in SEC play. Kentucky fought back, winning the first set in four of the other five singles matches and then grabbing a 3-2 lead. Pousette downed Levant at number four, 6-4, 6-1 and 62nd-ranked Hesoun handed Overholser his first SEC loss, 6-3, 6-4, at number three to tie the match. The Wildcats then grabbed the lead as 24th-ranked Carlos Drada prevented Morrison from reaching the 100-win plateau in singles, downing UF's seventh-ranked player, 7-5, 7-5.
Adcock set the stage for the deciding match by rebounding for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jorge Escallon at number six singles. Mann then sealed the comeback with his fourth consecutive victory and first clinching win of the season.
"This is a very memorable win," said Mann. "There was a lot of pressure and it really came down to the wire. This type of match brings a team together and builds character."
