FLORIDA MEN'S TENNIS FALLS TO TENNESSEE, 4-3
Wednesday, April 12, 2000 | Men's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Tenth-ranked Tennessee (18-4, 10-1 SEC) handed the third-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team (19-3, 8-1 SEC) its first SEC loss this season, rallying from a 3-0 deficit for a 4-3 victory Wednesday afternoon at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
With the win, the Volunteers claim at least a share of the SEC title, their first since 1990. Tennessee's 67th-ranked Adam Carey came back to post a 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory over Gator junior Nathan Overholser at number three singles to clinch the win.
The loss snaps UF's 11-match winning streak, as well as Florida's 14-match home winning streak dating back to last season. Florida can still claim a share of the conference title with victories in its final two matches this weekend, at Georgia Friday and at Vanderbilt Sunday.
"It was a tough loss," said Gator head coach Ian Duvenhage. "We did a great job in doubles but we did not capitalize on our opportunities in singles."
The Gators won the doubles point for the 11th time in their last 12 matches with wins at number one and number three. UF's sixth-ranked team of juniors Jeff Morrison and Nathan Overholser downed Tennessee's Mark Fitzpatrick and Paul Podbury, who are ranked tied for 55th, 8-3 at number one for their 12th consecutive victory. Junior Marcos Asse and senior Dylan Mann clinched the point with a 9-8 (7-4) win over 33rd-ranked Andy Crews and Peter Handoyo at number three, their first win over a ranked doubles team.
Senior Justin O'Neal, who is ranked ninth nationally, rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Tate Roberts at number two to improve to 17-3 in dual play. Morrison, who is rated fourth in singles, extended the Gator lead to 3-0 with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over 24th-ranked Mark Parsons at number one. But Tennessee rallied to tie the match with victories at numbers four, five and six. Sophomore Olivier Levant dropped a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 decision to 41st-ranked Peter Handoyo at number four and Mann fell to Paul Podbury, who is ranked tied for 100th, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 at number five. The loss snapped Mann's seven-match winning streak. Tennessee's Mark Fitzpatrick followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over senior Trey Adcock at number six, leaving the match at number three singles as the deciding point.
Florida closes the regular season with two duals on the road this weekend. The Gators travel to Georgia Friday, April 14 at 5 p.m. before facing Vanderbilt Sunday, April 16 at 1 p.m. ET.
