DAY 1 RESULTS
ATLANTA – Florida started off strong on Day 1 of the Georgia Tech Invitational, with the No. 9 men taking first in the field with 376 points and the No. 16 women in second with 246 points.
Caeleb Dressel again led the men with two event wins in the 50 free (19.28) and 200 IM (1:42.77). He holds the McAuley Aquatic Center pool record in the 50 free at 18.20, which he set back in March at the 2016 NCAA Championships and broke every event record in the process.
Mitch D'Arrigo won the third event title in the 500 free, touching at 4:16.87.
Dressel's and D'Arrigo's times were good for NCAA B-cuts.
The Gator men and women also won B- and C-finals in multiple events. Niki Urquidi took the 500 free B-final in a B-cut 4:45.25, while fellow Gator Ben Lawless also won the event's B-final in a B-cut 4:20.04. Harrison Haines helped make it a Florida sweep for the men in the 500 free, winning the C-final in 4:30.25.
Marco Guarente was first in the 200 IM C-final at 1:50.51.
Florida also finished within the top five spots in both the 200 free relay and 400 medley relay.
The Florida A-team of Kelsey Dambacher, Sherridon Dressel, Alyssa Yambor-Maul and Elisavet Panti finished fifth in the 200 free relay at 1:32.15, while the A-team of Emma Ball, Savanna Faulconer, Alyssa Yambor-Maul and Amelia Maughan finished third in the 400 medley relay at 3:39.75.
For the men, the 200 free relay A-team of Dressel, Enzo Martinez-Scarpe, Jan Switkowski and Mark Szaranek placed third at 1:17.29, and the A-team of Jack Blyzinskyj, Stanley Wu, Switkowski and Dressel was the runner-up in the 400 medley relay at 3:10.48.
In the diving well, Teya Syskakis broke through the 300-point barrier on 3-meter, scoring a season-high 309.50 points and placing second in the finals. Samuel Smith and Dylan Power also made the 1-meter final round, with Smith placing seventh with 319.55 points and Power placing 10th with 261.05 points.
GILLOOLY'S TAKE ON DIVING
"It was a solid first day of competition for everyone with three divers making it back to finals and a fourth, Dalton Goss, just missing out in 11th place. Sam Smith was a game-time decision due to illness and managed to pull in some valuable team points for the men's side along with Dylan Power in the 1-meter final. The highlight of the day was an outstanding performance by Teya Syskakis, finishing second out of a field of 47, many of whom we will be seeing again at SECs. I am really looking forward to the rest of the meet and expecting some even better diving tomorrow."
The Georgia Tech Invitational continues Friday with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. Live results can be found on ramblinwreck.com, and results will also be updated throughout the day on Twitter at @GatorsSwimDv and posted in full at the conclusion of each day of competition on FloridaGators.com.
