Gators Face Longhorns in Day One of National Indoors
Thursday, February 16, 2017 | Men's Tennis
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Florida men's tennis team turned right around this week to head back to Charlottesville, where it will compete for the 2017 ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
The Gators (seeded 7th) will face off against the 10th seeded Texas Longhorns in the first round of the single-elimination tournament Friday (Feb. 17) at noon. The Gators last saw the Longhorns in Austin, Texas last season for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, where Florida defeated Texas 4-0.
Sixteen of the top Division I men's tennis teams will compete for the championship – fifteen of which qualified for the tournament by winning their respective ITA Kick-Off Weekend regional (Virginia received an automatic bid as the host site).
Quoting Head Coach Bryan Shelton
On what the team has been doing to prepare for this tournament…
"The thing we've tried to do this week is just stay in competitive mode. We haven't really done a lot of drilling per se, but we've just gone out there and competed against each other. The big change for us is playing indoors, we're an outdoor team and typically we're practicing outdoors all the time. We go up there and play inside and it's a faster pace, so we've been utilizing our indoor facilities to just go out there and play sets against one another and compete."
On the possibility of playing Virginia again this weekend after facing them last weekend…
"We're certainly hoping that we can get there. Something we said after that match was that we'd like to learn after this experience and have the opportunity to play them again before the NCAA tournament. We've watched all the videos so we've been able to see where we fell short, and I know a lot of those things are fixable with our preparation and our game plan, and then it just comes down to executing. I think that we see what we need to do to be successful about those guys, we just need to go out there and do it."
