Cameron Wins First SEC Title, Nine Gators Advance to Finals
Friday, May 12, 2017 | Track and Field
Lloydricia Cameron won Florida's 30th throws title since 2006, a figure that leads all SEC programs by six
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Florida junior Lloydricia Cameron won the ninth shot put title in school history, while nine Gators advanced to Saturday (May 13) finals on Friday's (May 12) second day of competition at SEC Outdoor Championships.
Cameron's title, which she won by 11.75 inches, is UF's first in the event since 2010, when Mariam Kevkhishvili capped her run of three outdoor titles in four years. Cameron's win also marked Florida's 30th throws title (men's and women's indoor and outdoor) since 2006, associate head coach Steve Lemke's first year with the program. The Gators lead all other SEC programs by six titles during that stretch, and only Georgia (24) boasts more than 15.
Florida's men scored 22.5 points in the field Friday, with a 2-3 finish from junior KeAndre Bates and freshman Grant Holloway in the long jump, along with a runner-up finish by freshman Clayton Brown and junior Jhonny Victor's tie for eighth in the high jump.
Brown, the top freshman finisher, cleared 2.19 meters (7 feet, 2.25 inches) on his third and final attempt, lifting himself from fifth place to second, a difference of four points. Victor topped out at 2.10 meters (6 feet, 10.75 inches) and halved a point with Auburn's Jaron Brooks.
Sophomore Yanis David added three points for the women in one of the deepest long jump competitions in history. The Lamentin, Guadeloupe native took sixth with a top jump of 6.40 meters (21 feet), which would have won or been less than four inches from winning 16 titles since the first SEC women's outdoor long jump competition in 1981.
Florida's final qualifiers via preliminary races were: Sharrika Barnett (400 meters), Ryan Clark (100 meters), Kunle Fasasi (400 meters), Becky Greene (1,500 meters), Jack Guyton (1,500 meters), Holloway (110 hurdles), Amber Johnson (1,500 meters), Brandee' Johnson (100 hurdles), and Skylar Ross-Ransom (100 hurdles).

NOTES & NUMBERS
HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Head coach Mike Holloway on Lloydricia Cameron's SEC title in the shot put…
"Incredibly proud of Lloydricia. She's had an up-and-down year with injuries … a lot of things going on. For her to come out here and get it done, on the biggest stage, great job by her. Her and Coach Lemke have been putting a lot of work in, and I know they feel there's a lot more there, but she's the SEC champion. Can't discount that at all."
Holloway on the jumpers scoring points Friday…
"Grant (Holloway) and KeAndre (Bates) did a wonderful job in the long jump, just got beat by a better guy today. They put up 14 big points for the team. Clayton (Brown), he's a freshman. Sometimes as a freshman you come in here and don't understand the magnitude of the meet. Him and Grant both, all of a sudden you get halfway through the competition and it's like, wow, this is really something special. Think they both had a little bit of deer in the headlights, but Clayton woke up about halfway through the high jump and fought his way to a second-place finish. Very proud.
"And in arguably the greatest (women's) long jump competition in SEC history, for Yanis (David) to finish sixth, jumping right at 21 feet, phenomenal job by her."
Holloway on some of the day's top performances in qualifying…
"Grant did a good job in the hurdles, just lost his focus and got beat by a guy who's running really well. We better be ready tomorrow, or he'll get beat again. Very proud of the lady hurdlers, Ryan Clark showing up. We've been waiting on that one for a while. Very proud of him showing up and showing us what kind of sprinter he really is. Kunle Fasasi and Sharrika Barnett did a wonderful job as well.
"At the end of the day, we had a great meet. Did a good job today, got a lot of qualifying done. We've got to compete our faces off tomorrow."
