Bates Captures Bronze at USATF Outdoor Championships

KeAndre Bates topped his personal record by 14.75 inches on his final attempt to swipe the bronze medal
DES MOINES, Iowa – Ten Gators competed during the second day of the USATF Outdoor Championships Friday evening, with KeAndre Bates headlining their performances with a third-place finish in the triple jump.
Bates, a three-time NCAA champion who exhausted his collegiate eligibility earlier this month, set three personal records in his six-jump series, with a 17.16-meter (56-foot, 3.75-inch) mark on his final attempt earning him the bronze medal. The El Paso, Texas native topped his previous personal record by 14.75 inches, usurping Omar Craddock for the No. 4 spot on Florida's All-Time Outdoor Top 10. Craddock, also a three-time NCAA champion for the Gators, finished sixth overall Friday.
Five-time NCAA champion and 2012 Olympian Jeff Demps posted an impressive time in the 100 meters semifinals, but crossed sixth in the final later in the evening.
Redshirt junior AJ McFarland capped a tremendous season with an 11th-place finish in the hammer throw. McFarland placed third among collegians with eligibility remaining. This year alone, the DeLand, Fla., native qualified for both NCAA Championships, scored a point outdoors with an eighth-place finish in the hammer, broke his weight throw school record, and improved his hammer throw personal record by 17 feet.
TJ Holmes, last year's USATF Outdoors bronze medalist and fifth-place finisher at IAAF World Championships, posted the fastest 400-meter hurdles qualifying time for a second consecutive day. Holmes runs the 400 hurdles final Saturday at 4:36 p.m. ET on NBC.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time World Championships gold medalist triple jumper Christian Taylor finished fifth in Heat 2 and eighth overall in the 400 meters semifinals. A trio of disqualifications in Heat 1 lifted Taylor from 11th place, but with only the top-four finishers in each heat earning spots in the final, he still could not advance despite clocking the eighth-fastest time.
Shortly thereafter, Taylor took one attempt in the triple jump—a foul—and passed his other two attempts.
And there was an altogether different kind of craziness at the Jamaican U20 Championships, as freshman Chantz Sawyers easily qualified for the 400 meters final.
NBC will provide live television coverage for the final two hours of USATF Outdoors competition both Saturday and Sunday. NBC Sports Gold will provide streaming coverage for the entirety of the final two days, though a paid subscription is required.
