CLEMSON, S.C. – Florida opened its 2019 indoor season with seven times and marks that rank in the top 10 nationally, including an NCAA-leading time from junior Grant Holloway, along with a school record from redshirt senior AJ McFarland.
Holloway, the 60-meter hurdles collegiate record holder, opened his season at the Clemson Invitational with two runs of 7.49 seconds—which tied the fifth-fastest time in collegiate history. Of the 10 sub-7.50 performances in collegiate history, Holloway is now responsible for five of them.
Also in the 60 hurdles, sophomore Cory Poole beat his personal record by six hundredths, clocking a time of 7.76 seconds. Poole's time ties him for fifth on the program's All-Time Indoor Top 10, and it ranks tied for seventh nationally.
The other event of note at Clemson was the men's 60 meters, which saw sophomore Hakim Sani Brown and senior Ryan Clark both post times of 6.62 seconds. The duo ascended into a tie for fifth on the program's All-Time Indoor Top 10, and their times rank tied for fourth nationally. They are also the fastest 60 times by Gators since the 2015 SEC Indoor Championships. Sani Brown edged Clark by four thousandths to take the win.
At the Hokie Invitational, hosted by Virginia Tech, McFarland broke his weight throw school record by 12 centimeters on his final toss of the evening. McFarland's new career-best mark of 22.32 meters (73 feet, 2.75 inches) ranks third nationally.
McFarland's teammate, sophomore Thomas Mardal, came through on his last throw as well, posing the nation's No. 10-ranked mark (21 meters / 68 feet, 10.75 inches).
Senior triple jumper Asa Garcia had a breakthrough performance, beating her indoor personal record by 17 centimeters and posting the nation's No. 3-ranked mark. Her best jump of 13.18 meters (43 feet, 3 inches) took her to sixth on the school's All-Time Indoor Top 10 as well.
The Gators conclude both their season-opening meets Saturday afternoon.
