Gators to Face Ranked Squads at Razorback Invitational
Thursday, January 24, 2019 | Track and Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Florida track and field opened its indoor season strong last weekend, and it will have the chance to flex a little more Friday and Saturday at the Razorback Invitational, with several Gators competing in their primary events for the first time.
Senior Yanis David, who entered the season as the nation's top returner in both horizontal jumps, will open her triple jump season against a field that features three of the top five women in the country. That group includes fellow senior Asa Garcia (No. 4 nationally), as well as Kentucky's Marie-Josee Excel, the NCAA leader. David tied the nation's top long jump mark in her season opener last weekend.
The men's triple jump is headlined by junior Clayton Brown, the reigning SEC Indoor Championships winner who went on to finish fourth at NCAA Indoor Championships.
Florida's quarter-milers will also get their first 400 meters action of the year. Senior Sharrika Barnett, last year's outdoor SEC champion, and Taylor Manson headline the women's group, while sophomores Benjamin Lobo Vedel and Chantz Sawyers lead the men's contingent.
Junior Grant Holloway, the top returner in the long jump, opens his season in that event, and he will face NCAA leader Rayvon Grey and fifth-ranked JuVaughn Harrison from LSU. Holloway will follow that up with his first-ever run in the 60 meters against teammates Ryan Clark and Hakim Sani Brown, both of whom are tied for seventh nationally.
Sophomore Amanda Froeynes will take part in her first pentathlon of the season, and sophomore Cory Poole will look to improve on his 60-meter hurdles personal record from a week ago against two of the nation's top five runners.
