Women's tennis suffers 4-1 setback to FSU in Fresh From Florida Sunshine Showdown.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 24 University of Florida women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 20 Florida State Tuesday evening in the Fresh From Florida Sunshine Showdown at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
Florida dropped the doubles point and saw the Seminoles carry their momentum into singles competition.
Sophomore Ida Jarlskog claimed the Gators' lone point as she earned a 7-5, 7-5 win and notched her third victory on the dual circuit.
For the first time in the dual match season Florida featured key returners McCartney Kessler and Victoria Emma in the same match. The sophomores, both nursing injuries, teamed up in doubles and competed at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots, respectively, in singles.
Emma and Kessler fell in a close one to FSU's Ana Oparenovic and Emmanuelle Salas, 6-4, in No. 1 doubles. The freshmen duo of Marlee Zein and Anastasia Kharitonova dropped a 6-2 match to FSU's Carla Touly and Ariana Rahmanparast as the Seminoles claimed the day's opening point.
In singles Florida fell behind on all but one court after the first sets were finished. That court belonged to Jarlskog who earned the win from the No. 1 position for Florida. Emma put together a spirited rally in set two of her matchup but fell in a tiebreaker while Zein, Kharitonova and Tsveta Dimitrova all pushed their opponent to three sets.
In its last three matches UF has featured three different singles lineups and three different doubles lineups.
After winning 56 of the first 57 matchups between the programs, Florida has dropped three consecutive contests to the Seminoles and two in a row at home.
UF continues its two-game home swing Friday, Feb. 22 when it welcomes the Oklahoma Sooners.

On takeaways from the match…
"I know the players, with their youth, it's going to be hard for them to find some positives in tonight's play. But it's my job to filter through that. In no way will I try to attempt to diminish the disappoint because that's just not what we do here. It's part of the romance of playing on this team, to have the belief that you should be able to beat anyone in any match and Florida State is no different. That being said, I thought they (Florida State) played really well and competed really well at the end of sets and some of those were crucial."
On having McCartney Kessler and Victoria Emma both back in the lineup and message going forward…
"Today was the first time we had both McCartney (Kessler) and Victoria (Emma) in the lineup. They have both been dealing with some injuries. If anything, today was the beginning of something. That was my message in the lockerroom. I think we can really get better from here. They both need to play and compete to feel natural on the court again. I think we can certainly get better from this but today Florida State was just a little bit tougher.
I do think that we can continue to grow a lot. I think we have a lot of talent. On some courts we have more talent than we know what to do with. It takes time to harness that and play well under pressure, so we are going to continue to hammer away on some of the things we have been telling the team. But with time and hopefully more matches from Victoria and McCartney I think we can really improve our play."
