BOX SCORE
ATHENS, Ga. – There is no such thing as an easy week in the SEC and especially playing on the road, but No. 8 Florida earned a tough 5-2 win over Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. on Friday evening. With the win, the Gators remain perfect in conference play.
For the first time in three matches, Florida earned the crucial doubles point to gain the early 1-0 advantage. Then the Gators got a boost from the top half of the singles lineup to clinch the match against the No. 26 Bulldogs.
UF moves to 4-0 in the SEC for the first time under head coach Bryan Shelton.
Oliver Crawford and Sam Riffice put up their ninth doubles win of the season, a team-best. Johannes Ingildsen and Alfredo Perez clinched the doubles point for Florida with a 6-4 win on court two, evening their record to 5-5.
In singles, Florida continued its first set dominance, taking four of the six courts. Riffice claimed the victory on court 3 and moved to 4-0 in SEC play. The freshman has only dropped one set throughout his rookie conference campaign.
No. 24 Crawford earned another upset as he defeated No. 20 Emil Reinberg in straight sets. Crawford and Reinberg were teammates for Team USA at the Master'U BNP Paribas in France this fall.
Moments later, Andy Andrade clinched the match for the Gators after he was forced into a third set against No. 10 Jan Zielinski. Andrade improved to 4-3 against nationally ranked opponents.
Senior and Georgia native capped the scoring for Florida with a thrilling three-set win. Kessler, in his final trip home to the Peach State with the Gators, rallied back after dropping the first set to take the second-set in a 10-8 tiebreak and 10-3 in the third set 10-point tiebreak.
Georgia claimed two points as freshman Lukas Greif lost his first dual singles match of the season in straight sets on court five and Ingildsen fell in his 10-point third-set tiebreaker.
Up next, Florida will head to Rocky Top to continue its SEC road trip. The top-25 battle between the Gatos and No. 22 Tennessee on Sunday will begin at 1 p.m.
Quotes from the Gators
Senior McClain Kessler (Calhoun, Ga.)
"It means the world for me to win in my home state and have my dad and coach growing up there. It felt so good for me to win a win in front of them. As a team, getting the win was amazing because the last two times we came here, we lost and our guys wanted this one bad. I could see it in their eyes when we woke up this morning that they were ready to go. This team is different because we all want to get better and work hard every single day. We are all working hard together and helping each other. We also love the battle more than the win! I see our guys when they get into the fight, loving every minute of it and never going away. Tennessee will be another big time test for us. They have a wonderful team of fighters, but our guys are really looking forward to getting back out there and grinding out to the end. We love the hard matches because we know it's something that will make us better!"
