Gators Headed to FSU Relays for Outdoor Opener
Thursday, March 21, 2019 | Track and Field
TALAHASSEE, Fla. – Outdoor season is here for the Gators track and field program, which won the men's team title at NCAA Indoor Championships for a second consecutive year and placed sixth on the women's side. Florida's outdoor opener, FSU Relays, is on the agenda Friday.
Florida's men, who have won two of the last three NCAA Outdoor Championships and a Division I-leading nine overall national titles since 2010, enter the spring ranked No. 4 in the preseason National Track and Field Rankings Index, published by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Gators' women check in at No. 10 in the USTFCCCA's preseason rankings.
National champions Yanis David and Grant Holloway will open the season in the long jump, while returning first-team All-Americans Nikki Stephens (400-meter hurdles) and Jhonny Victor (high jump) will compete in their primary events. David won the indoor triple jump title, while Holloway is the two-time defending 110-meter hurdles champion and boasts four career indoor NCAA titles.
Holloway is also expected to run a leg for Florida's 4x100 relay, which is should be a formidable squad featuring a trio of 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships 60 meters finalists (Holloway, Ryan Clark, Hakim Sani Brown) and transfer Raymond Ekevwo, who joined those three in the 60 final at SEC Indoor Championships.
