Florida enters the postseason on the uptick as it earned two top 50 victories over the course of its final three matches. The Gators' lone setback during the stretch occurred against No. 5 South Carolina (17-4, 12-1) which finished second in the conference standings. On April 11, UF notched an important win when it defeated No. 14 Michigan, 4-3. Not only was it an impressive victory in terms of the opponent but it was also pivotal in that it ensured that Gators would finish the season .500 or better, establishing their eligibility for NCAA Tournament action.
Featuring a roster that returned the services of just three players from last season's group, the Gators began the year with a relatively inexperienced team but have seen great growth over the course of the campaign. The Gators played competitive tennis all season long and battled in nine matches decided by one point. Despite losing six of their first seven matches decided by 4-3 verdicts, they won back-to-back 4-3 contests to close out the season. Taking on the always challenging SEC slate in addition to a stiff non-league schedule, Florida picked up eight wins against top 50 opponents including four top 25 foes.
Florida checked in at No. 24 in this week's ITA rankings while Ole Miss held a No. 43 rank. After falling out of the top 25 for six consecutive polls, the Gators have now notched a top 25 ranking in two of the last three issued ITA rankings.
No.15 Ida Jarlskog paced the Gators with a 12-5 record during the dual match campaign as she was one of four Florida players to nab at least eight victories. Playing in all but two matches at the top spot for the Gators, the Georgia Tech transfer earned nine victories over ranked opponents including two top 10 wins over No. 6 Fernanda Contreras of Vanderbilt and No. 10 Eden Richardson of LSU. Freshman Marlee Zein finished second on the squad with 10 victories. At No. 4, Zein registered an 8-4 record which included an impressive win over No. 45 Chiara Lommer of No. 14 Michigan. Zein came through for two match-clinching wins throughout the course of the season and earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors for the second time earlier this week.
Sophomores McCartney Kessler and Victoria Emma both dealt with nagging injuries, but both maintained ITA top rankings for the duration of the regular season. No. 35 Kessler wrapped up the regular season with nine wins, five of the top 100 variety, while No. 124 Emma notched six victories including UF's match clincher at No. 12 Texas A&M. Emma and Kessler have paired together to form Florida's No. 1 doubles team and are ranked No. 42 in the nation.
Freshman Sydney Berlin came on strong for the Gators, winning three of her final four regular season bouts and finishing 4-2 in SEC play. Junior Tsveta Dimitrova, in her first year of competition with the Gators after transferring in from Houston, added eight wins in singles and eight in doubles.
Ole Miss snapped a streak of three-straight conference losses when it knocked off No. 16 Texas A&M 4-2 this past Sunday in Oxford. The Rebels, like Florida, needed a win down the stretch to ensure a .500 or greater finish, and they got it against the Aggies despite dropping the doubles point. The Rebels feature two singles players ranked in the ITA top 100 in senior Tea Jandric (No. 73) and sophomore Sabina Machalova (No. 94).
During the regular season UF claimed a 4-1 win over Ole Miss at home in its SEC opener on March 1. Jarlskog provided the match-clinching victory from court one in dramatic fashion as she battled back for a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win. Jarlskog trailed 2-0 in the final set and 40-15 in the final game, but fought all the way back to seal it for UF.
Florida holds a 47-3 all-time mark against the Rebel which includes a 9-1 record in SEC Tournament play. The Gators have claimed the past 12 meetings.
With a victory over the Rebels, the Gators would earn a spot in the event's quarterfinal round which would pin them up against No. 2 seed South Carolina.
