Jumpers and Sprinters Lead Gators in Season Opener

Senior Clayton Brown threw down an NCAA-leading mark in the triple jump, leading the contingent of strong showings in the season-opening meet.
CLEMSON, S.C – Florida track and field opened its 2020 season Saturday at Clemson's Orange & Purple Elite meet, and the Gators got their indoor campaign rolling with strong showings on the straightaway and in the field, highlighted by Clayton Brown's NCAA-leading mark in the triple jump.

Brown's winning mark of 16.46 meters (54 feet) was the second-farthest legal jump of his career, and it was his first legal jump of at least 16.45 meters since the 2017 SEC Championships. That year, as a freshman, Brown posted his personal record of 16.58 meters (54 feet, 6 inches), which still occupies the No. 6 spot on Florida's All-Time Indoor Top 10 list.

Newcomer Jonathan Miller, a sophomore transfer from Nebraska, took second to Brown with a top mark of 16.04 meters (52 feet, 7.5 inches) and tied the No. 9 ranking on UF's All-Time Indoor Top 10. Brown and Miller are, for the time being, the only two collegiate triple jumpers over 16 meters this season.

Senior horizontal jumper Kala Penn stood out as the Gators opened the season, finishing second overall and first among collegiate entrants in the triple jump. Her top mark of 13.20 meters (43 feet, 3.75 inches) ranks seventh on the school's All-Time Indoor Top 10. It also ranks second nationally.

Redshirt junior Connor Bandel beat his indoor personal record of 18.84 meters on three of his final four throws, including his last attempt, which measured 19.29 meters (63 feet, 3.5 inches) and moved him from No. 7 to No. 4 on the program's All-Time Indoor Top 10 list. That mark was also a centimeter shy of his overall personal record, which he set at last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Freshman Semira Killebrew made a splash in her collegiate debut, finishing second among collegians and fourth overall in the 60 meters. The Indianapolis, Ind., native crossed in 7.29 seconds, tying the No. 3-ranked time on the program's All-Time Indoor Top 10.

Both Bandel's and Killebrew's marks rank sixth nationally in the very early goings of this indoor season.

A pair of Gators sped to times on the program's All-Time Top 10 in the women's 60-meter hurdles, as senior Brandee' Johnson topped her own fourth-ranked time (from nearly two years ago) by one hundredth of a second, and freshman Grace Stark posted the No. 5-ranked time in her collegiate debut.

Johnson crossed in 8.25 seconds, while Stark followed her 8.29 in the preliminary with 8.27 in the final.

Junior Cory Poole tied the second-fastest time of his career in the 60-meter hurdles, opening his season with a time of 7.76 seconds. Poole's personal record of 7.73 seconds, set last January, ranks fifth on Florida's All-Time Indoor Top 10.

And although it came in an event that will not be contested at either the SEC or NCAA Indoor Championships, sophomore Doneisha Anderson clocked a winning time of 37.17 seconds in the 300 meters, just one tenth of a second off the 10th-fastset time in collegiate history. Fellow quarter-miler Taylor Manson was not far behind, as she crossed in 37.36 seconds.

The Gators continue their indoor season next Friday and Saturday at the Gamecock Open in Columbia, S.C.
