Gators Return to Action at Two-Day Gamecock Opener
Thursday, January 16, 2020 | Track and Field
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Florida track and field will travel to South Carolina to compete in the Gamecock Opener Friday and Saturday, following its strong start to the 2020 indoor season at Clemson's Orange & Purple Elite last week.
Senior Raymond Ekevwo, who last competed in the 100 meters semifinals of the 2019 IAAF World Championships, will open his indoor campaign in the 60 meters Friday. Ekevwo's only 60 meters races last year came at the SEC Indoor Championships, where he finished sixth and clocked a personal record of 6.66 seconds. The Nigerian sprinter had for more success outdoors, finishing as the runner-up in the 100 meters at the SEC Outdoor Championships and breaking the school record with a gold medal-winning time of 9.96 seconds at the All Africa Games.
Clayton Brown opened his senior season with a nation-leading mark of 16.46 meters (54 feet) in the triple jump last weekend, but this week he will focus on the invitational high jump. Brown is a two-time SEC Outdoor Championships high jump silver medalist.
Another triple jumper looking to make her mark in another event is Kala Penn. The senior posted the No. 2-ranked triple jump mark in the nation last week (13.20 meters / 43 feet, 3.75 inches), and she will focus on the long jump (an event she scored in last year at the SEC Indoor Championships) Saturday. Brown and Penn will both be taking part in the 60 meters as well.
Quarter-milers Doneisha Anderson and Taylor Manson, both coming off strong showings at 300 meters last week, will run their first 400 meters races of the season Friday.
Other Gators with times or marks ranked in the top 10 nationally and looking to improve their standing are: Brandee' Johnson (tied No. 8 – women's 60-meter hurdles), Semira Killebrew (No. 7 – women's 60 meters), and Cory Poole (No. 6 – men's 60-meter hurdles).
