ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Battling a top 10 opponent on the road for the second-straight match, the No. 24 University of Florida women's tennis team fell to No. 10 Michigan, 4-0 Tuesday evening inside the Varsity Tennis Center.
Taking the court against the Wolverines for the second-straight year, Florida couldn't mount the same comeback it did a season ago in Gainesville when it stormed back from a 3-1 deficit. On Tuesday night, UF again fell behind early but the Wolverines wouldn't waver as they registered victories in three-consecutive singles tilts to collect their third win of the season.
Squaring off with Michigan, the highest ranked team in the Big 10, the Gators finished with one doubles win as Tsveta Dimitrova and Ida Jarlskog compiled their first of the season, but they were shut out in singles action.
Playing indoors for the first time this season, the Gators saw Michigan open the match by securing the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. For the third-straight contest to open the season UF came up short in doubles play, but Dimitrova and Jarlskog were victorious from the second slot with a 6-3 win over Bella Lorenzini and Nicole Hammond. McCartney Kessler and Victoria Emma mounted a late rally in their bout, but couldn't come all the way back, while Sydney Berlin and Marlee Zein dropped a 6-1 result to Anca Craciun and Alyvia Jones.
After the tally was even at 2-2, Dimitrova and Jarlksog rattled off four-straight games to close out their opponent.
With an uphill battle in front of them after falling short in doubles, Florida's focus shifted to singles. The Gators were in contention late in several opening sets, but were only able to claim one as Michigan retained its momentum. No. 96 Emma was the lone Gator victorious in their first set. Berlin raced out to a 4-1 lead but was unable to hold on while Zein rallied back to tie her tally at five all only to see Alyvia Jones pull away late.
Court two was the first to go as Michigan's Nicole Hammond defeated Jarlskog, 6-2, 6-2. In a rematch of last season's epic dual between No. 38 Kessler and No. 26 Giulia Pairone, the Wolverine senior would hold the upperhand this time as Pairone posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Michigan clinched the match on court five when sophomore Anca Craciun edged out Dimitrova, 6-2, 6-3.
The Gators saw three matches go unfinished as courts three, four and six went without a verdict.
Emma's match stood at 7-5, 1-4 when the match went final. Both Berlin and Zein had extremely competitive opening sets but saw their respective contests end with them trailing in the second stanza.
The Gators' next match is set for February 14 when they host North Florida for their 2020 dual match home opener at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 5 p.m. ET.

Overall thoughts on the match...
"Tonight was disappointing. Clearly this is a well-coached Michigan team and I've always admired how tough and classy Ronnie's teams are. However I never felt like we gave ourselves a chance. We are still making some of the same mistakes we did last year in serving and returning and that is certainly my responsibility to improve. Our mission going forward is to get tougher in point play by learning to start and stay in points better. Obviously, the first few matches of any season will provide plenty of data points for us to work on in training. This season is no exception. What is important in the near term is to see our response and willingness to make improvements."
