Gators take on UNF on Valentine’s Day.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After spending its first month of the dual match season away from home, the No. 24 University of Florida women's tennis team is set to host its 2020 home opener Friday when it welcomes the UNF Ospreys to the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. as fans are invited to spend their Valentine's Days with the Gators. The night features a slew of fun Valentine's promotions.
No. 24 Florida has been tested early and often in its spring campaign as it has already battled two top 10 teams on the road. The Gators began the year with a win on a neutral court against Oklahoma but have fallen at No. 8 NC State and at No. 10 Michigan since.
The Gators feature two ranked singles players and one ranked doubles side. No. 52 McCartney Kessler, a two-time All-SEC honoree, continues to lead the way for Florida while rookie Layne Sleeth checks in at No. 54. Sleeth and sophomore Marlee Zein have earned the nation's No. 60 doubles ranking.
At 17-10 overall, Kessler has enjoyed the most success individually and has competed at the No. 1 spot in all three matches. UF's lone senior Tsveta Dimitrova ranks second with eight combined wins after a strong showing in Florida's preseason tournament in the Bahamas. 2019 All-American Ida Jarlskog, who re-joined the team at semester, has split time between the No. 2 and No. 3 slots to open the campaign and is 1-1.
The Ospreys have opened the season 5-0 with three home wins and two away from Jacksonville. UNF has victories at USF (4-3) and at South Alabama (5-2) so far in the month of February. Collectively UNF has posted a 26-4 mark in dual match singles and an 8-5 record in dual match singles.
The Gators are 1-0 all time against UNF and the first meeting between the squads occurred last season in Jacksonville when Florida posted a 4-1 victory. The Gators dropped the doubles point but rallied back with four-straight singles wins.
Historically the Gators have been extremely tough to beat in home openers as they hold a 40-2 all-time mark in home lidlifters.
Following Friday's tilt, the Gators continue their mini two-match home swing Saturday, Feb. 22 when they host Georgia State.
