Gators Set to Open Indoor Season at South Carolina
Thursday, January 21, 2021 | Track and Field
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida track and field will kick off their 2021 indoor season as they travel to Columbia, S.C. to compete in this year's Carolina Challenge Saturday inside the Carolina Indoor Track and Field Complex.
The event will be the first meet for the Gators since the cancelation of the 2020 season due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We are very excited to get started this weekend," said Gators head coach Mike Holloway. "Everyone has been working hard on the track in preparation for this opportunity to compete, but more importantly, there has been an incredible effort off the track by the team and all the staff to help keep everyone safe. Looking forward to watching the Gators kick off the 2021 indoor season."
Semira Killebrew, who won silver during the SEC Indoor Championships last year, will headline the 60 meters for the Gators. The sophomore, who currently holds the No. 2 spot on UF's All-Time Top 10 list, will look to improve her personal best time of 7.19 that ranked first nationally among freshmen in 2020.
Sprinter Taylor Manson will kick off her senior campaign by competing in the 200 meters. The Senior ran the 10th-fastest time in school history during last year's 2020 Tiger Paw Invitational, followed by an NCAA 12th-ranked 400 meters performance during the SEC Indoor Championships.
Manson joined jumper Kala Penn as the only athletes in 2020 to post UF top-10 performances in two separate events. Penn, who will represent the Gators in the long jump Saturday, will look to move up in the Gators record books as she holds the No. 10 spot on UF's All-Time Top 10 list in that event. In addition to her long jump top 10 performance last year, the redshirt senior ranked 10th nationally in the triple jump after posting the seventh-best mark in UF history.
Gabrielle Wilkinson and Abbie Harrelson will compete in the 800 meters. Wilkinson currently ranks eighth on UF's All-Time Top 10 list for that event. Meanwhile, Harrelson helped the UF DMR squad secure the third-fastest time in school history last year, finishing 12th on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying list.
On the men's side, Jonathan Miller, who holds the No. 9 spot on UF's top 10, will make his season debut in the triple jump. Meanwhile, Hugh Brittenham and Marshall Dillon will run the mile.
The Gators will also see a fair amount of new faces this weekend. Transfer augments PJ Austin and Sterling Lester will make their Gators debuts in the long jump and the hurdles, respectively. Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Alexis Brown will make her collegiate debut in the long jump.
