JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida's men secured eight more NCAA Outdoor Championships berths Friday, closing their week at the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville with a total of 10 entries. The Gators track and field program holds 12 entries so far with the women having secured two Thursday.
Senior jumper Clayton Brown started the afternoon strong for the Gators, securing two berths in this year's national championship. The five-time All-American logged a mark of 2.16 meters (7 feet, 1 inch) in the high jump and took a leap of 15.94 meters (52 feet, 3.75 inches) [+0.6] in the triple jump to punch his two Oregon tickets.
Redshirt freshman Joseph Fahnbulleh was the first runner to clinch an NCAA berth, posting a time 10.01 [+3.2] seconds in the 100 meters.
The Hopkins, Minnesota native returned to the track later in the afternoon to punch a second ticket to Eugene, finishing second in the 200 meters with a time of 19.94 [+3.2]. Fellow redshirt freshman Tyler Davis joined Fahnbulleh in qualifying for nationals with a 12th-place finish and a time of 20.54 [+2.1].
Freshman Ryan Willie will also travel to Eugene to represent the men in the 400 meters. The SEC Indoors bronze medalist finished second in his heat with a time of 45.56 seconds, securing an automatic qualification for nationals.
In the 400-meter hurdles, redshirt senior Denzel Villaman secured his second-consecutive trip out west with time of 50.75 and a ninth-place finish.
The night was capped off with an automatic qualification by Florida's 4x400-meter relays team. The squad formed by Willie, Chantz Sawyers, Villaman and Kunle Fasasi, finished second in their heat to earn the Gators' 14th-consecutive NCAA Outdoors berth in the relays.
The action continues Saturday from Jacksonville with the women's final round of competition.
Talitha Diggs, Taylor Manson and Doneisha Anderson will compete in the 400 meters, while Gabrielle Wilkinson and Imogen Barrett will look to punch their tickets to Oregon in the 800. Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Grace Stark will represent the Gators in the final round of the women's 100-meter hurdles.
