GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Junior Gators men's tennis player, Blaise Bicknell, had a busy summer after competing in four total tournaments since May and tallying an impressive nine singles victories.
The Jamaican native continued his undefeated dominance at the 2021 Davis Cup tournament in Panama City, Panama, after going 5-0 to help his team qualify for Group II. Bicknell was one of five players selected to represent Jamaica in the Americas III Group at the Davis Cup, where two nations advance to the 2022 World Group II Play-offs.
Jamaica secured an overall 8-1 record at the Davis Cup to lead Pool C, which also consisted of Puerto Rico, Panama and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Jamaica and Costa Rica (Pool B) tied for the most overall wins with eight apiece.
In pool play, Bicknell's first singles victory of the Davis Cup came with a straight-set win over Tomas Del Olmo of the U.S. Virgin Islands, 6-2, 6-3. His second win was secured after beating Panama's Jose Gilbert Gomez, 6-3, 6-4. His final singles match in pool play ended with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Puerto Rico's Quinton Vega. Bicknell added a doubles win in pool play with teammate, Rowland Phillips, as they defeated Panama's J. Gomez and Luis Gomez, 6-3, 6-2.
He also helped the team to a 2-0 victory over the Bahamas in the Group III Play-offs after winning his singles match in three sets against Justin Roberts, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, to clinch the final point for Jamaica and seal the team's qualification for Group II.
Bicknell was going to compete in the doubles portion of competition, but the Jamaicans already went up 2-0 to clinch the victory after Phillips won in two sets against Kevin Major and Bicknell closed out his singles match with a victory over Roberts.
His most recent wins of the summer came at the M15 Edwardsville, IL tournament in late July, where he totaled four singles wins before losing in the quarterfinal round to Australia's Rinky Hijikata in three sets, two of those going into tiebreakers.
Bicknell advanced out of the qualifying round with wins over USA's Micah Braswell and Preston Brown. In the main draw, he picked up two more singles wins, with tightly contested victories over Australia's Tristan Schoolkate and the USA's Bruno Kuzohara.
