Briggs, Dudeney Notch Three Wins Apiece on Second Day of Kitty Harrison Invitational

Florida picked up six wins on the day as Alicia Dudeney and Carly Briggs went undefeated.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Doubles pairing Carly Briggs and Alicia Dudeney continued their dominance at the Kitty Harrison Invitational hosted by North Carolina as they won two matches to advance to the finals on Saturday, Sept. 25. Briggs not only will make a doubles finals appearance, but with her singles win today, she will also be in the singles final tomorrow.

In doubles, the Briggs/Dudeney combo won their first doubles match this morning over a ranked opponent, and in demanding fashion. They defeated the No. 30 doubles pair from Northwestern, Briana Crowley and Christina Hand, by a 6-1 score.

The Gators duo would go on to win a semifinal match against Duke's Ellie Coleman and Eliza Omirou, 6-4, en route to a finals appearance on Sunday.

Florida also notched four singles victories on the day. No. 41 Briggs picked up her second ranked win of Saturday after beating No. 77 Tatsiana Sasnouskava of Old Dominion. Briggs was up on her opponent, 3-0, before Sasnouskava retired.

Dudeney collected her third win on the day as she defeated Princeton's Stephanie Schrage in a tough battle, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6. Freshman Emily De Oliveira collected her first singles win as a Gator after overpowering LSU's Shaye Longwell in two sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Another freshman Gator who tallied an impressive win on the day was Bente Spee. Spee took on Wake Forest's Mia Ahmad, losing the first set 4-6, then winning the second with a bagel, 6-0. In the super tiebreak, Spee was down at one point, 9-4, but that did not deter her. She came back and won her match after an exciting 12-10 super tiebreak score.

QUOTABLE
"We had a great day competing today. It was nice to see our freshmen fight their way through some hard-fought wins when they haven't played their best tennis yet. College tennis is about finding a way and we are learning that here at our first event of the year. Carly continues to lead the way with more impressive performances in both singles and doubles. Not only is she an incredible competitor, but she's hitting the ball as well as I've seen it right now. We will try to match today's competitiveness tomorrow and end on a high note." - Head Coach Roland Thornqvist
