
Gators Sweep No. 28 Mississippi State, 7-0

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – For the sixth time this season, the No. 1 Florida Gators swept their opponent after defeating No. 28 Mississippi State, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex to remain unbeaten in conference. This also marks the third time in SEC play that the Gators swept their match.
Florida (14-2, 6-0 SEC) continued its hot streak in doubles play after winning its ninth-straight doubles point, this time against the Bulldogs (11-8, 1-5 SEC). At court three, the Nate Bonetto/Duarte Vale pairing took care of business, defeating Alberto Colas and Carles Hernandez, 6-3.
Mississippi State would get one back as the Bulldog duo of Florian Broska and Gregor Ramskogler beat Sam Riffice and Ben Shelton at court one, 6-3.
It all came down to No. 2 doubles where a ranked showdown was occurring. The Gators No. 54 tandem of Andy Andrade and Mattias Siimar were taking on the No. 65-ranked pair of Davide Tortora and Nemanja Malesevic.
The Bulldog duo went ahead 4-5, but the Gators veteran pair would battle back and win the next three games in a row. Andrade and Siimar were able to tie it at 5-all, then they broke serve to take a 6-5 lead. The Gators duo never lost a point in the winning game as they clinched the doubles point with a score of 7-5.
Florida went on a rampage in singles play, winning all six singles matches and only dropping one set.
It started with a decisive, straight-set victory on court three for No. 109 Vale. Taking on No. Hernandez, the Gator only gave up three games after winning his first set, 6-3, then putting up a bagel in the second set for a 6-3, 6-0 score.
No. 1 Shelton followed suit at court one, picking up his second top-25 win in just as many matches. The Gainesville native defeated No. 25 Broska in straight-sets by a score of 6-1, 7-5, using an ace to seal the deal in the second set.
No. 93 Andrade would clinch his second match this week and third overall with a victory at court four. The Gator overtook Ramskogler in two sets by scores of 6-3 to collect his 11th dual match singles win of the year.
Will Grant made his second appearance at court six this season, remaining undefeated at the position with an impressive win against Tortora, 6-4, 6-4. Grant now has a 9-4 overall singles record and is 2-0 in dual match play.
Senior Josh Goodger tallied the Gators' sixth point of the day at court five. The senior battled in his match as he fell in the first set to Colas, 4-6. He then forced a super tiebreak with a 6-4 second set. The Gator secured his fourth dual match singles win with a 10-7 super tiebreak to defeat Colas.
No. 56 Riffice picked up his second ranked win of the week and completed the sweep for the Gators on court two. The captain was able to win his first set, 7-5, before taking the next set by a 6-4 score for Florida's fifth straight-set win of the day.
Riding a nine-match win streak, the Gators now take sole possession of the top spot in the SEC as they are the only team left without a loss in conference. With this win, Florida also totaled its 11th ranked victory of the season.
UP NEXT: The Gators play one match next week as they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for a conference matchup against the No. 51 Arkansas Razorbacks.
