GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Tallying their third sweep of the season, the No. 6 Florida Gators picked up a dominating 7-0 victory over the No. 6 South Carolina Gamecocks on Friday evening at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
The Gators (8-2, 1-0 SEC) took two of three doubles matches from the Gamecocks (11-3, 0-1 SEC) to claim the doubles point and go out to an early 1-0 lead.
South Carolina's duo of Daniel Rodrigues and Beau Pelletier bested Gators Sam Riffice and Ben Shelton at court one, 6-3, to have the slight advantage in doubles.
However, just a couple minutes later, the Florida tandem of Andy Andrade and Mattias Siimar put up an impressive 6-3 victory at court two against Raphael Lambling and Carter Morgan to even the doubles contests.
All eyes were on court three as Nate Bonetto and Duarte Vale took on Jake Beasley and Casey Hoole. The Gators duo went down 3-5 before coming back and forcing a tiebreak. Both teams would go back-and-forth with their points until the Bonetto/Vale pairing overtook the Gamecocks' duo with a 7-6 (11) battle to give the Gators a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. With this win, Vale now sits tied for eighth all-time in career doubles wins (83).
After notching his first SEC Freshman of the Week honor two weeks ago, Bonetto found himself continuing his winning ways after picking up his second victory of the evening. He faced Pelletier at court five, putting up a straight-set win with scores of 6-2, 6-1, to give the Gators a 2-0 advantage.
Just like Bonetto, Vale collected a couple of wins on the day, improving his career overall win total to 182, which now ranks seventh in program history. Taking on Beasley at court three, Vale won in two with a 6-1, 6-4 score over the Gamecock.
Leading 3-0, No. 63 Riffice clinched the match for Florida with his straight-set win against Raphael Lambling, 6-2, 6-2, to pick up the Gators' first SEC victory of the season.
Freshman Abedallah Shelbayh was the next Gator on the board after tallying his second dual-match win of the season. The Jordan native defeated Morgan in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-2, on court six.
No. 3 Shelton totaled his 11th ranked singles win this year after defeating No. 19-ranked and 2021 NCAA singles runner-up player, Rodrigues, in two sets. Shelton posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory over his opponent for his fifth top-25 win this season.
Completing the sweep of the Gamecocks was No. 36 Andrade, who also collected two victories on the night. Paired against Hoole at court four, the Gator made a comeback after being down a set early. Andrade rallied to win the second set by a score of 6-4, before coming away with the victory in a 10-7 super tiebreak.
The Gators would take five of their six singles matches in straight-sets, while putting together a 8-1 overall record against South Carolina in the match.
