Friday, June 10, 2022 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Just like it has all season long, the jumps squad delivered once again on Thursday evening as the women opened up competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Jasmine Moore jumped out to 6.72m/22-0.75 on her opening attempt and never looked back, winning the NCAA Outdoor Championship in the Long Jump.
The Grand Prairie, Texas native was extremely consistent across her entire series on Thursday evening, hitting four marks in her five jumps that would've earned her the title.
She has now won every available Long Jump title this season with both National Titles and both Conference Titles.
Claire Bryant earned First Team All-American status for the fourth time in her career, finishing fifth in the Long Jump with a mark of 6.51m/21-4.25.
Between the pair, Florida tallied 14 points on the opening day of competition to move into a three-way tie for second place in the team race after six scored events.
Moore is now 7-for-7 on titles this year across the Long Jump and Triple Jump. If she wins the Triple Jump on Saturday afternoon she would become the first woman in NCAA history to go 8-for-8 on titles in the horizontal jumps in the same calendar year.
If Florida's performance on the runway wasn't impressive enough, the Gators went to work in the running events in what was an extremely-fast day on the track.
Talitha Diggs opened things up by shattering the school record in the 400 meters to take the top-qualifying mark into Saturday's final.
Diggs crossed the line in 50.08, besting the previous school record set by Sharrika Barnett (50.69) in 2018.
Not only was it a school record, but Diggs' performance made her the No. 8-collegian of all-time in the 400 meters.
Anna Hall opened up her busy weekend by crushing her own school record in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 54.48.
That time put her into Saturday's final as the top-qualifier, ensuring a busy schedule of events come the weekend.
Hall is set to contest the seven-event Heptathlon over Friday and Saturday, the finals of the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday afternoon and a potential leg on Florida's 4x400 team as well.
So far this weekend, three school records have already fallen. Diggs (400m) and Hall (400mH) join Champion Allison (400m) with new top marks in Florida history.
Vanessa Watson earned a lane in Saturday's finals of the 400-meter hurdles with a semifinal mark of 56.75.
Gabrielle Wilkinson (2:03.70) and Imogen Barrett (2:02.24) were qualifiers into the finals of the 800 meters.
Taylor Manson (Second Team) and Thea Jensen (Honorable Mention) earned All-American honors after their performances in the 400 meters and Shot Put respectively.
To close out the evening, the quartet of Manson, Sterling Lester, Doneisha Anderson and Diggs carried the baton in 3:28.40 to put the 4x400 relay into the finals.
Florida has put itself in a great position when it comes to the team title race. On top of the 14 points so far, the Gators will have chances to score additional points across 12 entries on Saturday.
The Gators have contestants in the Heptathlon (2), Triple Jump (3), 400 Meters (1), 400-Meter Hurdles (2), 800 Meters (2), 5000 Meters (1) and 4x400 (1) remaining.
Lester and Hall will begin competition in the Heptathlon tomorrow afternoon with four events on the opening day.
The Heptathlon, 400 Meters and Triple Jump will be among the first events to be contested on Saturday evening.
Florida's men return to the track tomorrow for the final day of the men's competition. The Gators have seven entries left on the men's side across five different events.
