Florida Wins Men’s NCAA Outdoor Championship
Saturday, June 11, 2022 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – For the fifth time in program history, the Florida men's track and field team was the final group standing when the outdoor season ended.
The Gators, behind 54 team points on Friday, captured the program's 5th NCAA Men's Outdoor National Championship and the tenth national title overall.
Florida has now won 10 of the 24 contested Men's National Championship meets since 2010 with five wins indoors and five outdoors.
This victory marks the 11th National Championship for Head Coach Mike Holloway with ten on the men's side and one on the women's side.
The Gators came in to the day without any points on the board. But with seven entries in play on Friday evening, the pieces to bring home the title were on the table.
Florida opened the evening with a runner-up finish in the 4x100 relay. The team of Dedrick Vanover, Tyler Davis, PJ Austin and Joseph Fahnbulleh ran 38.52, missing out on first place by .03 seconds.
Fahnbulleh nearly ran down the entire field on the anchor leg. The Gators' runner-up finish marked the first eight points on the board of the evening.
40 minutes later, Vanover and Fahnbulleh came back to face an ultra-competitive field in the 100 meters.
With about 20 meters to go, Fahnbulleh took over the lead, crossing the line in 10.00 (+0.6) to win the NCAA Outdoor Championship in the 100 meters.
Vanover earned fifth in his first-ever individual national final, clocking 10.16 to score four big points for the Gators.
Fahnbulleh's title in the 100 meters was the third in Florida history joining Bernard Williams (2000) and Jeff Demps (2010) in the record books.
Champion Allison and Ryan Willie finished 2nd and 5th respectively in the 400 meters to add 12 points to the Gators' efforts.
Allison crossed the line in 44.41 while Willie followed with a personal best of 45.00.
Florida scored 34 points across three events (4x100, 100m and 400m) in the span of one hour to move into a tie for first in the team race with five events to go.
National Championship meets bring out the best in true competitors. To win a title, you have to have individuals step up and perform at the highest level.
Fahnbulleh did that on Friday night.
After anchoring Florida to 2nd in the 4x100 and winning the 100 meters, Fahnbulleh made history at Hayward Field.
Fahnbulleh obliterated the field in the 200 meters, clocking a personal best and school record of 19.83 to all but secure the team title.
His time was No. 4 all-time in NCAA history and gave him back-to-back NCAA Outdoor Championships across 200 meters.
He became the first runner in Florida history to win two individual running events at the same NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Fahnbulleh's back-to-back titles in the 200 meters made him the ninth individual in men's program history to win back-to-back NCAA Outdoor Championships.
To close out the night, with the title already in hand, Florida went out and broke the meet and facility record in the 4x400 relay.
The Gators carried the baton in 2:58.88 with legs from Jacory Patterson, Willie, Jacob Miley (45.85) and Allison (44.06).
That time was just .35 seconds shy of the collegiate record, set earlier this year by the same quartet of Gators.
This group now has three of the fastest six times in NCAA history in the 4x400.
There have only been two performances under 2:59.00 in NCAA history. Florida has run them both this year with the same team.
Florida's National Championship marks the 13th-consecutive NCAA Outdoor Championships that it has finished with a team trophy.
The Gators have also now won at least one event title on the men's side at 13-consecutive NCAA Outdoor Championships.
While the men's final day was going on, Anna Hall raced out to a huge day one lead in the Heptathlon.
She sits a top the leaderboard through four events with 3922 points. Sterling Lester sits fourth with 3580 heading into the final day tomorrow.
Florida's women get the chance to make history tomorrow as they chase a team title as well. The Gators will have 12 entries competing tomorrow including the two heptathletes.
