GATOR MEN'S TENNIS ONLY SEC SCHOOL LEFT UNBEATEN AFTER WIN OVER OLE MISS

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - In a match between the final two Southeastern Conference teams without a blemish on their conference records, it was the fourth-ranked Florida Gators that emerged still spotless on Sunday following a 5-2 victory over eighth-ranked Mississippi in men's tennis action. The Gators (12-2, 4-0 SEC) ran their home winning streak to nine straight over the last two seasons, including seven wins at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex so far this year.
Mississippi (9-3, 2-1), looking to avenge an earlier loss to UF from the National Team Indoors in February, never seriously threatened the Gators after the Rebels 36th-ranked doubles team of James Shortall and Vikrant Chadha fell to Florida's Jeff Morrison and Nathan Overholser 8-4 in the clinching match for the doubles point.
"We came into this match knowing only one of us would come out without a loss," Head Coach Ian Duvenhage said. "Right now, we're in the driver's seat as that team; but there are seven more conference teams out there that can beat us at any time that we still have to face. So we have to continue to play well and continue to improve our game as we go."
Senior Justin O'Neal, ranked 12th by the latest WingspanBank.com Collegiate list, won his 103rd career singles victory and 25th win of the year at No. 2 singles to clinch the match and move all alone into second place in Florida's history books for career wins. Facing Ole' Miss' top-ranked player, Alex Hartman (tied for 40th), O'Neal fell behind 2-1 in the first set before breaking Hartman in three straight service games to take the first set 6-2 and an early lead in the second, 1-0. The Gator senior from Lima, Ohio, moved out of tie with Florida Assistant Coach Damon Henkel (102 career victories) with the win and trails only Mark Merklein (112) in the ranks of the Gator greats.
Senior Dylan Mann (Woodland Hills, Calif.) made the match score 2-0 in just under 50 minutes, making easy work of 46th-ranked Anders Stenman at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Stenman held serve just three times in the match including the first game in both sets. Senior Jeff Morrison (Huntington, W.V.), ranked seventh in the latest national rankings, overpowered 89th-seeded James Shortall by a score of 6-2, 6-1 for his 97th career victory and 20th of the season. Junior Nathan Overholser (Okemos, Mich.) was the final winner for the Gators at the No. 3 spot in the lineup, fighting to a 6-2, 6-4 win.
Florida will next be in action this Wednesday, March 22 at 4:30 p.m. against Florida State at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
