GATOR MEN'S TENNIS TEAM MOVES TO 8-0 IN SEC WITH 5-2 WIN AT ARKANSAS
Sunday, April 9, 2000 | Men's Tennis
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The second-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team (19-2, 8-0 SEC) extended its winning streak to 11 matches with a 5-2 win over Arkansas (6-12, 2-7) Sunday at the University of Arkansas Tennis Complex.
The Gators, who remain the only undefeated team in the league at 8-0, host Tennessee (17-4, 9-1) on Wednesday in an important dual with a share of the SEC title on the line. Florida can win the league title outright with a victory over Tennessee and a win in either of its last two matches, at Georgia Friday or at Vanderbilt Sunday. UF's last outright SEC title came in 1994.
"It was very cold and windy, but it is a good win for us," said head coach Ian Duvenhage. "We have a tremendous opportunity Wednesday against Tennessee."
Senior Justin O'Neal became Florida's all-time leader in career overall victories as the Gators won the doubles point for the 10th time in their last 11 matches. O'Neal and sophomore Olivier Levant posted an 8-1 victory at number two before juniors Jeff Morrison and Nathan Overholser, who are ranked 17th in the latest WingspanBank.com Collegiate Rankings, clinched the point with an 8-4 win at number one for their 11th consecutive win. O'Neal passed former Gator Mark Merklein (190 career wins from 1991-94) for the most overall victories at Florida with his 191st career win (108 singles, 83 doubles).
The Gators quickly closed out the match in singles as Levant, Morrison and Overholser rolled to straight set wins. Levant downed Tiago Azevedo at number four, 6-2, 6-2 for his fourth win in a row. Morrison, who is ranked fifth nationally, knocked off 15th-ranked Oskar Johansson, 6-1, 6-2 at number one to move past former Gator and current UF assistant Damon Henkel into sole possession of third place on UF's all-time chart with his 103rd career singles victory. Overholser earned his fifth clinching win of the year, tied for tops on the team, with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Magnus Kullenberg at number three. Senior Dylan Mann upped his winning streak to seven with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 win at number five over Chris Campbell. Senior Trey Adcock and O'Neal both dropped three-set matches, with Adcock's loss snapping a four-match win streak. O'Neal, who is ranked 11th, lost for the second straight match after entering the weekend with a 13-match winning streak in singles.
Florida hosts No. 11 Tennessee Wednesday, April 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex. The Gators are 12-0 at home this season and have won 14 straight matches at Ring Complex dating back to last season.
