Friday, February 16, 2001 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE, Wash. -- Sophomore Troy Hahn (Indianapolis, Ind.) won the clinching match as the No. 8 Florida men's tennis team rallied to defeat No. 9 Illinois, 4-3, late Thursday night in the opening round of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the University of Washington. The Gators (4-0) lost the doubles point for the first time this year but captured each of the top four singles matches to down the Fighting Illini (4-2).
UF will now face defending national champion and No. 1 ranked Stanford on Friday night at 7 pm ET. The Cardinal (4-0) eliminated the Gators from last year's NCAA Championships with a 4-0 win in the semifinals.
"Words can not describe how proud I am of my team," head coach Ian Duvenhage said. "This is one of the best matches I have ever seen in my 20 years as a tennis coach. Hopefully we can build on this and keep getting better and stronger. I was very proud of the guys today."
Illinois clinched the doubles points when eighth-ranked Amer Delic and Graydon Oliver topped second-ranked Nathan Overholser (Okemos, Mich.) and Olivier Levant (Paris, France) in a matchup of Top 10 teams. Overholser, Levant, freshman Jeremy Wurtzman (Rochester, NY) and Hahn all won at No. 1-4 singles respectively to give Florida the team victory. Levant's 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win over 39th ranked Phil Stolt is the highest ranked win of his career. Levant, Overholser and Wurtzman all maintained their perfect, 4-0, singles records in dual matches this year with their victories.
