GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 24-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team started off the 2016 season with victories over the Troy Trojans and the Stetson Hatters on a chilly afternoon at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville.
The Gators began the doubleheader against the No. 63-ranked Troy Trojans. UF grabbed the doubles point with victories from the No. 3-ranked duo of seniors Diego Hidalgo and Gordon Watson (6-1) and the No. 40-ranked tandem of juniors Maxx Lipman and Elliott Orkin (6-1).
The No. 31-ranked Hidalgo defeated Daniel Bustamante, 6-0, 6-3, No. 91-ranked Alfredo Perez made quick work of Giovani Samaha, 6-1, 6-1 and then freshman McClain Kessler clinched the match for the Gators, 6-3, 6-3 over Pablo Moreno. UF finished all six singles matches with Chase Perez-Blanco getting the straight set victory over Felipe Mansson, 6-3, 6-4, Orkin defeating Andy Lau, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(1).
In the second match of the day, UF again got the doubles point with victories from Perez and Josh Wardell (6-1) and the tandem of Kessler and Jordan Belga (6-4).
Singles action saw the Gators sweep the field on Sunday afternoon. After victories Wardell and Perez-Blanco, Orkin clinched the match victory with a straight set win over Loic Blanco, 6-3, 6-2. UF would go on to win the next three matches for the 7-0 sweep of the Hatters.
The Gators go on the road next weekend to Austin, Texas for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. UF does not compete back at the Ring Tennis Complex until Saturday, February 27 at 1 p.m. when in-state rival Florida State visits Gainesville.
Head Coach Bryan Shelton on today's victories over Troy and Stetson
"I thought we played pretty well. It was not our best and I think that the conditions had a bit to do with that as did Troy and Stetson. It was windy out there and gusty. They were two good teams that presented some nice challenges to us. Overall, I thought that we handled it very well. Anytime you get started with a new season, you can't go out there thinking that you are going to play perfectly. Overall, I thought our guys made some nice adjustments throughout the day. To get our first couple wins, it is always a good feeling."
Senior Diego Hidalgo on his performance and the performance of the team this afternoon
"I think it was a very good match for everyone on the team. We competed really well and that was key. It was all new stuff because it was the first match of the season, but the guys and I were really happy with it."
