Gators Log Handful of Top 10s to Open Hokie Invitational

Florida turned in five all-time top 10 times/marks, and four Gators climbed into the top 10 nationally in their events
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Florida jumpers and throwers turned in all-around impressive performances, while its sprinters and hurdlers posted solid qualifying efforts but, for the most part, fizzled in the finals.
Redshirt sophomore weight thrower AJ McFarland headlined the strong outings with a second consecutive personal record in the weight throw. With an opening throw of 21.20 meters (69 feet, 6.75 inches), McFarland passed Antonio Emperator (2004) for the No. 3-ranked mark on the program's all-time top 10. It also ranks as the sixth-best throw nationally.
Triple jumpers Clayton Brown and Asa Garcia also cracked UF's all-time indoor top 10.
Brown, the national leader in the high jump, hopped, skipped and jumped 16.34 meters (53 feet, 7.5 inches), the No. 6-ranked mark on the list. The St. Andrew, Jamaica native finished as runner-up to KeAndre Bates (16.37 meters / 53 feet, 8.5 inches), who was a mere five centimeters off his indoor PR. Entering this weekend, only two Division I men boasted marks better than 15.92 meters.
Garcia was part of a 1-2-3-4 finish for the women, taking second with a top jump of 12.81 meters (42 feet, 0.5 inches), the No. 8-ranked mark on the top 10. Only Yanis David finished ahead of her, and the sophomore took the title with a nation-leading 13.49-meter (44 feet, 3.75 inches) jump.
UF's other two all-time top 10 times came in the women's 60-meter hurdles prelims, as freshmen Timetria Mitchell (8.34 seconds) and Brandee' Johnson (8.40) logged the No. 5- and No. 6-ranked times, respectively. Mitchell already held the No. 5 spot from the team's season-opening meet, but her time Friday (Jan. 20) topped that one by 0.04 seconds.
Florida also posted a slew of additional PRs, including those from each of its three women's weight throwers—Lloydricia Cameron, Jontavia Dykes, Amara Wiggan—and Marques Burgman in the 60 hurdles.
All of Friday's and a full schedule for Saturday (Jan. 21) are listed below.
HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Head coach Mike Holloway on the day's top performances…
"Thought we did a great job in the triple jumps. Clayton (Brown) opening up a little further than he jumped in high school, KeAndre (Bates) jumping a lot further than he did last year indoors. On the women's side, I thought Yanis (David) did a great job, and the other three young ladies were solid.
"On the track tonight, we did a good job of qualifying, and something was just amiss in the finals and the hurdles. I can't tell you what it was, but I'm in charge of that, so I've got a way to make it better. But we took a step back in the women's hurdles. The men's hurdles I thought we were solid. In the men's dash, we've got to get some things figured out. We're practicing better than we're racing right now.
"But overall I thought it was a solid night. Very, very pleased with the women's weight throw. They did a great job. And another big PR for AJ (McFarland). A lot of positives to take away from what we did tonight. We've got some work to do tomorrow and we've got to stay focused."
